The vicious attacks on Sharon Ellul Bonici as candidate for member of the European Parliament have been absolutely foul and without any foundation whatsoever.
Whether Ms Ellul Bonici rates highly in the popularity stakes is irrelevant when it comes to my vote. What I do consider relevant is showing my disapproval at the way she has been depicted as a U-turn fanatic with regard to the EU. Though it is no secret that she embarked on a blitzkrieg campaign in the past to oppose the EU at every opportunity, since the majority of the Maltese voted for entry into the European Union, I find nothing dissolute in this person choosing to become an MEP on the Labour ticket, working in the interests of the Maltese. If her candidature is being remarked upon as controversial, how much more controversial is the fact that while the majority wanted to join the EU, they still chose three Labour MEPs and two Nationalist? Methinks Ms Ellul Bonici should consider those waging a war on her candidacy as unimportant as a tiny dent on a classic car.
