The Nadur carnival has caused a considerable amount of controversy in the last week or so. We had an outburst from the religious leaders of Malta and Gozo and their followers. They wanted the police to act and bring these culprits to face the courts and impose some sort of punishment on them.

So much for love and forgiveness.

I wonder, if this had happened around the time of Christ, say in Jerusalem or Galilee, how Christ would have reacted. Would he have called the local authorities, in his case a few Roman soldiers, and have these people thrown into a dungeon?

All this belly-aching shows the rest of the world how socially immature Malta is; it makes Malta look like a Taliban tribe. The biggest threat to world peace today is religious fundamentalism - please do not let it happen in Malta.

This week in Sydney, the Gay Mardi Gras was held and 300,000 people turned up for the parade. It is a day where diversity is celebrated with the freedom to poke fun at anyone and everyone such as politicians, sports people, entertainers and yes, the clergy, regardless of religion.

As in the Nadur carnival, no malice or hatred was intended. Here, however, no one got offended. The next day life went on as usual.

Wake up Malta.
