Cancer Foundation aiming to have palliative care unit this year
The Malta Cancer Foundation has announced three Kayak challenges to raise funds for a palliative care unit for cancer patients.
Prof Stephen Brincat, chairman of the foundation, said a 59-nautical mile kayak challenge around the Maltese islands will be held this month and will be followed in June with a Pozzallo-Valletta expedition. The biggest challenge will be a 175-mile Tunisia-Malta expedition in June next year.
Hs said the foundation would like to see the new unit up and running at Boffa Hospital this year, eventually transferring it to Mater Dei Hospital with the rest of the Oncology Department. Staff recruitment will start shortly.
Fund-raising events started last year when a Gozo-Sicily Kayak for Cancer challenge raised €29,900.
SMS donations may be made on 50618930 for donations of €6.99 and 50619209 for donations of €11.65.

I wish every success to these fundraisers. Palliative care is so important and something which is hard to get outside of hospital or hospices. In the UK we are lucky also to have Macmillan Nurses who provide care to those who are able to live out their last days at home. I trust that one day this will be available in Malta if indeed it is not already.
My father was a patient at the UK's first hospice and the care they gave him was amazing. He even had one Doctor Pace as his consultant there.
The Hospice movement is yet another positive step in giving the best quality of life possible to those who are terminally ill and whom certain secularist elements would like to see be "put out of their misery". It values human life to the point of natural death.

I commend Prof. Stephen Brincat's good work. I know from first hand experience his total dedication and concern for all his patients. I hope the new oncolocy building at Mater Dei Hospital will become a reality in the near future.

Thank you Prof Stephen Muscat to do these things for us.
On the other side it is very sad that you as a Prof has to organise these things , The government has to step in as quick as possible,Why do patients have to go abroad to get a PET scan and spend loads of money while there is so much money spent the wrong way here in Malta.
When i was abroad the doctor over there was very surprised when i told him this sad story.
I hope that the government will act to fight this disease.

I commend Prof Stephen Muscat for being the brilliant man he is. He is able to help so many people not only through the work he does at Boffa hospital but also through such initiatives.
I truly hope that the government keeps it's budget promise and invest in a PET scan machine for this tiny island as we truly need it to help so many in need.
