In the flood of letters about the state of the roads, someone wrote that Malta has the worst ones in the world. I think the writer has never been to India: the potholes there are held together with thin strips of tarmac and corruption often sees the money for repairs going into an official's pocket. I have visited India every year for the past eight and in one instance a road was finally mended, after being ignored for seven years.

My friend planted banana leaves into the potholes just when a government minister was to visit.

There were red faces all round... road fixed.

Malta can only claim one world record and that is the hot air spouted by those who massacre birds flying over en route to greater Europe.
