I refer to the article New Speed Cameras Are Just Cash Cows, Experts Say (February 20).
Early one Sunday morning in October last year while driving on Triq Ħal-Far I was photographed doing 62.7 km/h and fined €34.94.
A spread of 2.7km/h is not only less than walking pace but is not definable within the accuracy of my older car's speedometer. In the UK speed cameras have a margin of tolerance which allows for such minor infringements.
The local council must indeed be using the cameras to gain revenue if this is the intolerant way in which offences are treated. At the time of the incident I did not believe I was speeding but have to accept that the camera "does not lie"!
If Gudja local council is to levy a fine in the region of €35 for every infringement, regardless of the level of excess speed, they will indeed become rich very quickly!
