Nadur carnival charges
With reference to the article penned by Christian Peregin entitled Nadur Carnival: Nine To Be Charged (March 6), it is to be clarified that steps leading to charges being issued against nine Maltese persons for offensive behaviour and costumes used during the Nadur carnival, were not commenced following the public statement made by Archbishop Paul Cremona and Gozo Bishop Mario Grech.
As a matter of fact, investigations by the Gozo Police into this matter started immediately once these offences were observed by the police.

Let's get on track...apparently, if Daphne Caruana Galizia is correct in her article of today (in another newspaper), it is illegal to dress as a priest, but not as Christ and the apostles. Apparently Christ and the apostles went scot-free. I heard that Judas was not even charged...presumably he was the one who gave the tip-off.

@ Francis Saliba:
Are you saying that not a single police officer saw this person in his costume? If so, why were no steps taken to stop him immediately?
The Commissioner of Police has not declared that the charges were not commenced as a result of the Bishops' proclamation. Charges are brought up in court, so they have to happen after the event. What the statement claimed was that it was the investigations that commenced immediately.
If that is so, why was this individual not arrested immediately, or better still, asked to go and change clothes? Are we expected to believe that the police let him stay in the costume and started the investigations immediately after the carnival was over?
Are we expected to believe that no police officer in Nadur noticed anyone dressed in the "offensive" costumes? And if they did, why would investigations be necessary when the "offenders" could be arrested immediately?
Are we saying that the police are inefficient and "blind" just so that we may say that it was not the Bishops who instigated the arrest?

If these "offences" were observed by the police, why were they not stopped there and then?
If this is true, it does tend to place the police in a poor light.

Will the anticlerical brigade now stop maligning our bishops by accusing them of instigating that the police take action regarding the obscene celebrations at this year's Nadur carnival? Of course not!

Can anybody please state what their attire were, for Jesus and his Apostles as far as the learning goes had no such dress as a soutane or other type of uniforms, the dress of that era was simply a loose long garment, if these nine young men were wearing robes where does the priest impersonation come from.
What I find a little beyond belief is that another group of young men wearing phallic symbols was not found to be offensive.

If this is to be believed then people should have been given prior warning.
After all... folk have been dressing up as nuns / vicars etc for years during carnival as well as fancy dress parties.
This whole episode smacks of extremism. A slap on the wrist and "don't do it again" should have sufficed for this year. I am positive that the "perpetrators" had no intention to offend anybody's sentiments and just got caught up in the "madness and mayhem" of Carnival.
This matter has been blown out of all proportion.
Some blogs I've read on this topic stop just short of demanding a good old fashioned stoning ! Tut Tut.

FORCED WORK IN THE COMMUNITY
When are we going to hear about convicted persons being forced to do useful work in the community such as plastering and painting of schools, gardening, etc. If they are sent to prison, it is from our taxes that we have to make up for their confortable stays and once they leave prison, they will probably end up being unemployed and again, who is going to make up for them? ... unless they do not end up becoming theives!

Was there pressure or a meeting on the topic between the police and the Church before the carnival?
