While doing some microfilm research in the Glasgow Herald of 1853, I came across a report of a horse-riding accident which involved a young British girl in Malta in December 1852. This reminded me of the unfortunate incident in Marsa some weeks ago.

The report, carried in the Herald of January 17, 1853 describes that "....in December of last year Miss Drumond, eldest daughter of the London Banker, enjoying a ride, was thrown violently and broke her jaw. As she lay on the ground she still held on the bridle when the animal reared."

"On the 22nd December it was reported that her jaw had been set, her wound healing and was in high spirits.

"At 4 a.m. of the 29th December she felt unwell and called for her maid. At 5 a.m. her doctor, Doctor Stilon, was sent for but by the time he arrived she had passed away.

"It is believed that she suffered some internal injury. Miss Drumond was buried the following Saturday."

Presumably there is some record or headstone in a cemetery in Malta that records the internment of this young British girl.
