San Giljan 4
Sirens 7
(1-3, 2-2, 1-1, 0-1)

Sirens Centro Casalinga disposed of a wasteful San Giljan team by seven goals to four in yesterday's first match to record their second victory in the BOV Winter League.

The Northerners procured a three-goal start mainly thanks to the returning Juergen Borg who netted twice in the opening session.

The Saints reduced the gap to 4-3 and then 5-4 on two occasions in the middle sessions only for Charlie Zammit to seal his team's win with two goals, while David Cutajar also scored a brace.

Sirens were the more composed team despite having to stretch themselves to shrug off their opponents' challenge.

Playing soundly in the covering phase and blocking well on their opponents' firing range, Exiles SC managed to limit their more-quoted opponents, Neptunes Vodafone, to a reasonably low four-goal deficit midway through the second match.

But when the Reds extended their lead to 7-1 by the end of the third quarter, any lingering doubts that Exiles might run Neptunes very close were dismissed despite the decision by John Paris to rest his established players almost simultaneously.

Michele Stellini went on to increase his goals' tally by four conversions to make it 8-1 before Exiles netted twice for a respectable scoreline.

As expected the ASA youngsters played second fiddle to Sliema McDonald's and were beaten by the Blues in the last game of the afternoon.

Sergio Afric sent several of his tail-enders into the fray from the outset and maintained that stance throughout, thus indirectly contributing to keep the score gap in favour of his team to within reasonable proportions.

Although it was tight in terms of goals, the Blues' victory was never in doubt as Mark Meli scored four times.

A minute's silence in memory of Charles Triganza, the former Sliema and Malta player, was observed prior to each of the three matches played yesterday.
