At the next monthly cultural lecture organised by Din l-Art Helwa, architect Edward Said will be discussing the highly topical subject of 'Subterranean Valletta'. With the assistance of various entities, particularly the Valletta Rehabilitation Committee, Mr Said has made subterranean Valletta one of his primary fields of study.

The presentation will analyse the subterranean dimension of Valletta chronologically, from the time when Mount Sceberras was virgin land, up to the rediscovery of tunnels recently. Mr Said's research attempts to interpret all available documentation to identify what actually lies beneath the city, rather than simply give an inventory of the different underground spaces, which are believed to form a highly elaborate network of passageways, tunnels and catchment areas all with their own separate function.

The lecture will take place on Thursday at the Judge Caruana Curran Hall at 133 Melita Street, Valletta, from 6 p.m.
