Gorg Agius, a former general secretary of the Labour Party and of the General Workers’ Union when this was statutorily linked to the Labour Party passed away this afternoon, aged 84.
He had started off as a member in the union’s youth movement, later becoming education officer. He moved on to the executive committee of the Admiralty Section and to the national council.
He became general secretary of the union in 1971 a post he retained until his retirement in 1985.
When the British troops withdrew from Malta on March 31, 1979, Mr Agius had joined the then Prime Minister Dom Mintoff at the foot of the Freedom Monument in Vittoriosa.
Following his retirement, he became deeply involved in the union’s pensioners section.
Between 1955 and 1957, he was general secretary of the MLP. This was when the party had been negotiating integration with Britain.
His funeral is on Monday. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Marion and his son Adrian.
In separate statements, the GWU, the Labour Party, the Nationalist Party, and Alternattiva Demokratika expressed their condolences with Mr Agius’ family.
