Online petition targets mobile phone time windows
Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas, an MEP candidate for the Nationalist Party, is urging people to sign an online petition against time windows imposed on pre-paid mobile phone customers.
A newly-launched site, www.bantimewindows.org, comes just days after Nationalist MEP Simon Busuttil urged the Malta Communications Authority to probe imposed time windows, which, he said, constituted an unfair deal for consumers.
Dr Metsola Tedesco Triccas said on the website that about 87 per cent of mobile phone users were on pre-paid plans and time windows were not only an unfair practice but also a barrier to competition.
"It is unfair for consumers to lose their credit and face higher charges simply because their time window has lapsed," she said, adding that operators had no objective justification to keep such time windows, which only served to increase revenue to the detriment of consumers.

Having a high number of signatures means that people took 1 second of their lives to see where the banner on timesofmalta.com would led them. I did that myself! And yeah! Why not sign while you're at it... After all it's all the better for me if they remove time windows... But in actually fact I really do not feel strongly against them. So what if mobile phone companies choose to charge for the service of keeping an active line? Didn't Maltacom do the same for ages? Nobody ever complained!! Is it the innovative way in which they're choosing to charge us that's the problem here??
Finally yes, even if you DID agree with Metsola's initiative, a significant amount of resources are going into the creation and maintenance of her bantimewindows campaign.. Especially when you consider that she is a new runner, not yet elected to act on behalf of the people... Her time and money would be better utilized if she focused on explaining to us exactly how (not just what) she is going to target in terms of issues that really count...

@ John Zarb - what's with all the negativity? I think it's great that Roberta is being so proactive on this issue and great that she and Simon and AD are all working on this issue. All we need is for MLP to come on board too. Surely the more people who take this up the more the chance of this practice being eradicated. I don't agree with you when you say that this is an issue that doesn't affect people, judging by the amount of signatures on www.bantimewindows.org and the corresponding facebook page, I think that this is an issue quite a few people care about - just ask those who don't spend their lives on the phone what they think. Of course this is not the only issue - in fact I've just seen www.roberta2009.eu where Roberta outlines her position on a number of other very important issues. Well done all round!

@John Zarb: You have forgotten that this issue was first brought up by Joseph Muscat over a year ago. All Joseph, Simon and AD asked for was an investigation into the practice. Roberta has gone one step further and her petition might stimulate the authorities to actually do something. And so what if Roberta is following what has already been brought up by someone else? Since when do persons/parties patent their activities? Isn't it after all in all of our (even yours John Zarb) interest that if something is unfair something should be done about it?

This matter has already been taken up by Simon Busuttil and AD. Roberta thinks she can get some brownie points by sticking her nose into an easy topic. Incidentally her website concept is also copied from Simon Busuttil's www.stopthedust.org
Moreover AD and Busuttil have the established means to take up a petition. What is Roberta going to do wth the signatures she receives ? Deliver them at a mobile phone company reception counter and have a shout with the secretary there ?
Time windows are not a big issue and they do not deserve all this attention. I think the young intelligent electorate (who Roberta seems to rely on) will see that this is a total gaffe from her part.

Roberta should concentrate more on the issues that really matter for the survival of our nation.

Recently I found out how the mobile companies worked in Malta and i understand why some mobile companies dont have the open windows which from a business side of it and expence they might be right . but from a parent side of view i rather have a open window so i can contact my children anytime even if thier mobile is not topped up , and what about older people they dont use thier mobile as much as younger generation .My point is to these companies that there is a way to reduce cost allover and have open time windows .
Mobile Companies in UK have no time windows and the system work easy and cheaper.

Not only the time window but also when one runs out of credit but his time window is still active and one adds credit to his mobile phone the message states that "your credit has been extended by (say ) 90 days. But this is a false statement. Your time window is NOT added to what is left on your phone but starts all over with the new credit .
So you loose both ways, either on the credit or on the time window. A sharp practice indeed.
