Malta Air Traffic Services Ltd (MATS) has signed a contract for the supply, installation and commissioning of two secondary surveillance radars.
MATS, a government company, is the sole air navigation service pProvider for Malta’s airspace. It employs 150 people, the majority of whom are air traffic control officers and air traffic safety electronics personnel.
It signed the contract with SELEX SI, an Italian company which forms part of the renowned Finmeccanica Group.
SELEX’s relations with Malta go back to the mid-80s when Malta installed its first enroute radar located at Dingli. SELEX were selected following an international call for tenders. Financial details were not given.
With this investment, which is self funded by MATS, Malta would be meeting its commitment to the European Convergence Implementation Plan namely to have triple radar coverage within the western sector of the Malta Flight Information Region.
