MEPA approves 102-room extension of Ramla Bay Hotel
A 102-room extension of the Ramla Bay Hotel in Marfa was approved by MEPA this morning. There was no objection. The Planning Directorate said that although the site was in an Outside Development Zone, it fell within the goals and objectives of the Structure Plan and draft Marfa Action Plan with regard to tourism.
The project includes the building of a new wing, two new tennis courts, an extension of a gym and landscaping.
It will be completed within five years, at which time the four-star hotel will have a total of 265 rooms.

This interests me greatly as our family owns 7 weeks of timeshare at the Ramla Bay Resort.
We underwent a long period of upheaval during 2004/5 when another floor was built; on top of the existing hotel; adding 40 more hotel rooms.
The hotel now comprises a ground floor of reception area, bar, restaurant, shops and office space. Above that are 3 floors of hotel rooms making it a 4 storey building. The basement area comprises an indoor swimming pool, large conference rooms, garages etc.
The agreement with timeshare owners currently expires in 2015. I would not like to see another period of construction and upheaval to disrupt our holidays before that date. We are extremely happy with the resort as it is at the moment. We were refugees from the Mistra Village resort which we loved but was being increasingly surrounded by tall blocks of flats, spoiling the views from the apartments and creating dust and noise.
I cannot see the requirement for extra holiday accommodation in Malta now or for the next few years. Yesterday I had a phone call from a timeshare exchange company, desperate for holiday weeks in the UK for this summer.

Little by little more land being eroded away to development with no end in sight (this is besides the fact that buildings are getting taller and taller) - all in the name of economy, in the name of progress and in the name of necessity - when would this madness stop?. Aren’t hotels eternally complaining of low occupancies? I think it is also said that we need to have a population growth!!! yes more drain purification plants more landfill zones and now we need land to incinerate our rubbish and a couple of new main roads cutting through the scrub land would be very much up with the times never mind we can barely grow our own basic vegtables for local consumption

How can there be an objection if nobody can see the permit??

The Ramla Bay Hotel is a low building - if I am not nistaken a two storey building, - and since it has been stated that a new wing is being built it will not be 'another monster tower'.
I congratulating the investors in this project, as this confirms their faith in the Maltese economy.

Did MEPA bind the owner of the hotel that the site/ complex stays for tourism purposes for a number of years? "it fell within the goals and objectives of the Structure Plan and draft Marfa Action Plan with regard to tourism" - HOPE IT STAYS A HOTEL...... and not see another monster towers being erected
