Yet another ugly development planned
Property developer Anġlu Xuereb plans to build what he calls a "resort for the elderly" on an old industrial site in Naxxar, Simblia Gardens. I rather think that the emerging market for community residences for the cool and trendy older people will not entertain its clients being described as "elderly". Neither are they going to be drawn to the ugly box-like structures that we see in the illustration (February 28), a style of cheap and fast buildings that already blights most of the small island of Malta. The resort looks more like a last staging post with stacked concrete coffins, rather than a heaven on earth.
If only Mr Xuereb would wake up and check out the genuinely attractive resorts for "people of age" in the USA, the UK and even Mexico! And when is Mepa going to call a halt to the uglification of Malta?!
When is it going to stop people like Mr Xuereb building these grotesque and haphazard piles of concrete cells?

With reference to the many comments to Ms Marshall's letter , what she is critisizing is the style of the development, in other words how pleasing to the eye or otherwise it will look. For this reason she mentioned other spa resorts for the elderly in other countries which our developers could take ideas from.I think we have enough developments looking like matchboxes,we could do with something beautiful to look at and built to harmonise with the natural environment for a change.

@ V.Vella
wouldn't it have been much better to have your parents accomodated with you....instead of putting them in a home.....
what we need in Malta is home care facilites and not dump our parents in old people' homes

""With charges of more than twenty Euros (or is it Lm) per day is more than a five star hotel."
Can you please indicate to us how many elderly people on pension can really be able to pay that amount of money, considering also that most probably they will have to pay also for the doctor, medicines, etc, etc
We are coming to a situation in Malta, that instead of leaving our money saved through hard work to our beloved ones, we will give them to people investing in these type of homes.

Has Ms. Marshall-Warren taken a look at the brochure produced by AX Holdings?

Is this development not another alternative to the current stock of places where senior citizens may choose to retire? What is wrong with this type of development? I hope it will be good value for money. I have seen less attractive ones in the foreign countries mentioned. Nobody is forcing Ms. Marshall-Warren to move from Zabbar to Simblia Gardens. If she prefers other residences, she is free to go wherever she likes.
As long as the development respects the environment in which it is going to be positioned, I do not see anything wrong. Who knows, at some point in time I might find such a development of some use, if I shall be able to afford it! I used to teach in the vicinity for several years, perhaps I shall retire there. It is likely that the more retirement residential places we find, the more competition and choice we shall have, and hopefully they become a little more affordable. It is simply a question of supply and demand.

I wonder who you all have at heart your elderly parents or thier money? I fully agree with places like these, my elderly mother is in one of these homes, true they ar enot cheap but niether is the service they give and nor is the well being of my dear Mother. She has a nurse on duty 24/7 for any minor ailment and for administration of any medicine required and she also has a 24/7 service in case she needs any thing which also include a nice cup of tea at 3 am when for some reason she could not sleep. This way we can visit her and be with her without she feeling or actually being a burden on us.So please cut the sour grapes, cut the selfishness and leav be alone those who want to invest.Gone ar ethe days when the goverment did everything for us and gone are the days when a buisness man is scared to invest.

Kindly indicate which 5-star hotel charges so little.

Places for elderly have grown like mushrooms. It is evident that the aim of these places is to attract people on pension who are somehow well off. They target mostly their pension. With charges of more than twenty Euros (or is it Lm) per day is more than a five star hotel.
Most probably the Government is helping financially to build these houses but all the profit goes to the person who started the project.
It is admitted that all is voluntary but fleecing senior citizens should be looked thoroughly at by the powers that be.
Places like these abroad are usually surounded by parcs where the inmates can spend a little time relaxing in the open air and not just staying indoors.

Some people just sit there and moan while others get on with the job of investing money, creating jobs, opportunities and generlly improving things around them. Perhaps Ms. Marshall-Warren should have checked the facts before writing in to moan for nothing. I did, and I can tell you this is an excellent concept to convert a derelict area within the precincts of a Naxxar residential zone into a little paradise.
Perhaps she should pack up and go retire in Mexico then!!

Indeed - this going to be another matchbox structure - a nice place like Naxxar is going to have another blow - Mr Xuereb - are these your grand green credentials you shouted so much about less than a year ago (during last election) ?

nicely put.
i'm trying not to think about how this (and other) dreaded buildings will affect our environment and landscape.
@ j.borg
the elderly will have to liquidate all their assets and 'invest' in the elderly home
so much for their place in society!
