Unemployment grows
Registered unemployment in January increased by 525 when compared to the corresponding month last year, the National Statistics Office said.
The NSO said in a statement that the registered unemployed in January in Malta amounted to 6,220, whereas in Gozo they numbered 768.
In the 12 months to January , both Malta and Gozo experienced an increase in unemployment, by 496 in Malta and 29 in Gozo.
As for people registering for employment in the 12 months to January , the number of men increased by 519, whereas the number of women increased by six. In the same period, the number of people registering for work increased across all the age groups.
Between January last year and last January, those people who have been registering for work for under 20 weeks increased by 2,97.
Among men, the most common occupations sought were related to elementary work, plant and machine operation and crafts and related trades, whereas women tended to seek jobs which were clerical or service-oriented.
The registered unemployment rate in September stood at four percent of the labour supply. On a gender basis, the unemployment rate for men stood at 4.6 percent, while the unemployment rate for women stood at 2.8 percent.
The long-term unemployment rate, referring to people who have been registering for employment for more than 12months, stood at 1.4 percent.
The unemployment rate among workers aged 45 and over was 3.9 percent while the unemployment rate among people under 25 stood at 4.2 percent.

Of course unemployment goes up if we look around workplaces are filled with illegal immigrants , we all somehow blame the Government , But first I blame the greedy Maltese employer that he rather employ an illegal paying him less money than a MALTESE Worker . so yes i blame this problem on all the illegals THE GOVERNMENT needs to send them back to their COUNTRY , we need to stop wasting all the money for their hefty hospital bills , we feed them , i am sure it is cheaper to put them on a plane and send them back , then i am sure the unemployment will go down again .GOD BLESS MALTA and us Malteser.

Whatever is happening in the UK and France is of no consolation to those persons in Malta who have lost their employment. Even if they normally wear blinkers, I doubt that many of them would try to kid themselves.
The article mentions that "Among men, the most common occupations sought were related to elementary work, plant and machine operation and crafts and related trades". I ask the professed watchers of Bloomberg, CNN, and other 'experts' on world economics to turn off their Televisions and go for a walk. Visit any number of construction sites and then tell us one fact. How much of the work that is currently being done by illegal immigrants could just as easily be done - though not for peanuts - by Maltese men. If you don't know where to start, go to Marsa in the morning and follow the pick-ups and the Transits when they pick up those who are waiting.
That is why people are, quite rightly, blaming the government. It continues to be ineffectual in curbing these blatant abuses to the detriment of the Maltese Nation - which it ought to be duty bound to protect.

just wait an see what this summer will bring...top hotels are only at 30% occupancy and tourist bookings for 2009 are a disaster. This summer many people will be unemployed and summer work for students will be hard to come by. In Qawra / Bugibba business is already horrible.
No point in blaming our government however...we should blame the Labour Party in the UK for ruining england, our main tourism market. Viva il- Lejber !

When unemployment remained constant, all I heard was "Viva Gonzi! He has kept Malta on the right track!". Now that unemployment seems to have increased a bit, we'll blame the global recession. Seems to me like some are shielding Gonzi because he can never do anything wrong.
I fully appreciate that the global recession plays a part in the rise of unemployment. But Gonzi shouldn't have taken credit for a low unemployment rate, only to then not admit his responsibility when unemployment grows. It's either everything, or nothing.
Sounds like a totalitarian state, funnily enough - where the dictator takes credit for what goes right, but blames any setbacks on external factors.

Let us for once move away from politics and keep in mind that here we are talking about people without of a job with families to feed.
The present global recession has nothing to do with either, NP or PL, so please stop this idle talk.

Looking at the actual report the total unemployed is still much less than 1997 (7149 - 13% less) and 1998 (7437 - 16% less) - and in those years there was no recession or world economic slump!!!!

When one looks around Malta, there is a huge amount of neglect, so really there is no shortage of work needing to be done,It is obvious that there is poor management in Malta, as a lot of items needing repairs ,gets worse with neglect, There is a British expression , A stich in time saves nine! i.e. leave a pothole unrepaired, it will grow larger, this is obvious, but not apparently to anybody in charge, The bad Politicians & managers are the ones who should be out of work,! By rights there should be very little unemployment.

Reading these comments shows how blinkered people can be. The world's economy is collapsing and things will never be the same again and here we have the usual brigade trying to blame "GonziPN" and "PN fil-Gvern" for the increase in unemployment. the facts are stark in terms of our economy. We have had excellent results for the last decade with the occasional blip here and there. Last year tourist arrivals broke all records - but I guess that had nothing to do with "GonziPN" or "PN fil-Gvern". Does anyone remember the exceptional economic performance between 96 and 98?
Halluna.......the sooner everyone understands that we are an intrinsically part of the world economy the sooner we can start to be more objective about our situation!

As I always thought and said, the PL and its moaners rub their hands with glee when the unemployment figures show an increase. This gives them the silly excuse to criticise goverment. The same goes whenever there are some employees sacked because of lack of orders. This is sadism at its best. They should be ashamed of themselves. The party comes before the nation's well-being. For many months the unemployment figures was on the decrease so this time they are in the seventh heaven! There's no doubt that this item will take first preference on Super One radio and TV news

Let us all for once try hard to be objective.
Yes. Mr. M. Borg...we do watch Bloomeberg and CNN, and I've been aware about this looming global crisis months before the last general election.
However both your GONZIPN and their Sant/Jason brigade still chose to ignore everything and promise heaven on earth on their electoral manifestos. (Read them both now and you'll see what I mean).
To make matters worse, the incumbent Gonzi government had distributed jobs like Santa Claus prior to electrion time and that is why, up until then, unempolyment was somehow put on check.
Having said this, I think that in the present circumstances, Minister Tonio Fenech is doing a discreetly good job in his efforts to try to curb an unempoyment expolsion. I agree 100% with his policy to treat each factory on a case by case basis and giving all the allowed help that is possible.
Let us scorn this government for his cheating the population with his pre-electoral promises, but on the other hand let us pat him on the shoulder for his fine effort in trying to minimise the damage that is being caused by this global crisis.

This shows that even our country is being hit by the international crisis.
The government has to act quickly before it will be too late, and not give the impression that Malta is special and is 'riding the wave'.

first of all... some facts:
Population:
UK 2007 estimate 60,975,000
France Jan 2009 estimate 65,073,482
Germany Dec 2008 estimate 82,060,000
Italy Aug 2008 estimate 59,905,225
Malta 2007 estimate 410,290
with this in mind, UK population is almost 150 times that of Malta.
According to the BBC, "the number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance increased in the last month by 73,800 to 1.23 million".
Applying the same rate to Malta, it would result to circa 500.
THese are facts. although there is no denying that losing a job is tragic... blaming Gonzi is puerile and stupid.
Some people really don't know the world they are living in!!!!!!!
These are facts.
No denying that

Kompla ghixu f'dinja ghalikom.
In france, 90,000 jobs were lost in January. Around a 100,000 in the UK.
France's / UK populations are around 12x larger than Malta's. Divide those figures by 12. It would still get you a good 7-8000 jobs.
I am really surprised that considering everything, we have maintained practically the same level of employment. While I prefer no jobs to be lost, a minimal difference of 500-600 jobs is an impressive record in a world when all these factories are closing down and laying off people.

@A Saliba
Please SHUT UP! Don't prove your ignorance by just pointing your finger at Gonzi. If you think you are so wise why don't you find employment with the World Bank or the ECB maybe you can find a solution to the GLOBAL problem that is recession, which automatically leads to unemployment. Maybe you should get in touch with the whole world by following Bloomberg or CNN..then you will notice the extent of the whole problem.
