Owen Bonnici, the former barman of Qormi Football Club, was this afternoon convicted of having been in possession of a kilo of cannaibis which was not intended for his personal use. The jury returned a 6-3 guilty verdict. Bonnici was jailed for seven years and fined €14,000.

The jurors reached their verdict after four hours of deliberation. The trial, presided by Mr Joseph Galea Debono, started on Monday.

The accused had insisted that the drug belonged to Victor Magri, who had asked him to keep it in the bar. Mr Magri was shot dead at Ta'Qali some years ago.

Mr Bonnici said he did not know what the packet contained.
