Labour leader Joseph Muscat said this evening that all those motorists wishing to join the legal action against the government on VAT charged on vehicle registration tax should submit their details to the Labour Party on March 14.
Speaking in Parliament, Dr Muscat said the government was trying to discourage the people because of the expenses involved in filing a court case. The PL, however, was taking it upon itself to file a legal challenge on behalf of the people, without charging anybody.
Those interested in joining the case should give details of their ID card and log book.
Dr Muscat said the PL could not stand idle in the face of such an injustice, and if it lost the case in Malta, it would refer to the European Court.
The government, he said, was trying to delay everything in the hope that the prescription period would be surpassed. This, he said, was unjust and unfair. And while the government did not know where to get the €50m to refund the people, it was worth pointing out that the Opposition had, for four years, been insisting that charging VAT on registration tax was illegal, Dr Muscat said.
