I thank Emanuel Farrugia, the coordinator of the Consumers' Association Malta, for his letter of February 26 in which he informs us that the Għaqda is alive and kicking.

This is exactly what the consumer needs and which, incidentally, was the reason for writing my letter. Perhaps our letter exchange will help to raise the awareness and have the clout required to solve some of the consumers' problems. We both agree that no headway can be made without human and financial resources. While the volunteers of the Għaqda should be shown appreciation for their work, it is imperative that they be given financial backing by the consumers.

I am not aware of the number of paid-up members the Għaqda has on its books. I myself will be sending in my subscription - a nominal fee of €2.33 per year - and would appeal to many, many more consumers to do the same. Maybe we will then be able to say that we, consumers, have a voice.
