Herman Grech's report 'Labour makes €7.2 million State funding proposal' (The Sunday Times, February 15) dealt with the Labour Party's proposal (made behind closed doors) to the Parliamentary Select Committee wherein it is claiming that the State should donate at least €3 million over a five-year period to the LP to enable it to pay salaries and might then be able to fund research and consultation.
In this respect, Labour leader Joseph Muscat's public statements during the party's annual general conference on February 1 that, as a politician, he is in favour of state funds to finance political parties, are unfair. Should this proposal be accepted and eventually implemented, all Maltese and Gozitan taxpayers would end up subsidising political parties they do not support.
