Two slightly injured as scaffolding collapses
A man and woman escaped with slight injuries when the scaffolding they were walking under collapsed at The Strand in Gzira yesterday afternoon.
The woman is a 32-year-old from Indonesia, living in Msida. The police do not know the man's identity because he only injured his hand and left the hospital before they arrived, sources said.
The scaffolding was put up to support a derelict building, situated just opposite the bridge leading to Manoel Island and to allow pedestrians to walk safely on the pavement.
How it collapsed remains unclear.
The Occupational Health and Safety Authority is investigating.
No one was injured on Thursday when lightning struck a penthouse along the Pietà seafront. The lightning strike dislodged rubble, which, in turn, knocked down a metal balcony and damaged a stairway leading to a block of apartments and two cars parked in the vicinity.

What kind of jimmy rigged scaffolding is this !!
No inspection and certification takes place ?
How dangerous and deadly Mickey Mouse can it get.
Everyone does what they feel like, it seems.
This contractor should be held responsible and pay big time.

Was this scaffolding certified by the OH&SA as safe? I have my doubts because seeing the material, which was forming the scaffolding, does not look very suitable for the purpose. This the second scaffolding that collasped in under a year, one in Sliema and now this one. In both cases we were lucky that nobody sustained fatal injuries. How long can we keep trusting our luck? Isn't it about time that serious action be taken to avoid such incidents? Isn't there anybody accountable in the OH&SA?
How can the police don't know the identity of the man who sustained slight hand injuries in the incident? Was he treated at Mater Dei Hospital without giving his personal details? Isn't this basic hospital procedure?
