Forget about any suggestion that does not satisfy both Valletta and Brussels
Like AN. What Dr. KMB suggesting is yet another rather unproductive political showpiece, bringing no concrete solutions to the irregular immigrants issue.
All countries fail to control illegal immigration and Malta is no exception. A solution to satisfy both Valletta and Brussels does not exist and probably never.
Dr. Gonzi, Simon and Minster CMB are fully aware of the problem and they act, while others can only talk and talk.
By the way AN understand that very well.

If I ever expected the CNI to collect signatures, I would have undoubtedly bet on a petition to end our membership within the EU. But, of course, since KMB has now been deserted by his loyals, such as Alex Sciberras Trigona, Toni Abela and Sharon Ellul Bonici all of whom have now been converted, would not take that risk.

To those of you who were so keen on joining the EU but now cannot think of a solution to the EU-related immigration problem, you must conjure a method by which to dispose of all our uninvited guests. Now, let me think. Well I can name a few metropolitan cities that could absorb them without anybody really noticing: London, Liverpool, Paris, Marseille, Hamburg, Franfurt, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Milan. If you transfer just 200 of them to each of these eminently European Union cities, you have just unloaded 2000. I know, some might retort to this by saying, "but this is not a final solution." Ah, just don't let me hear that phrase again. I seem to have heard it before. If I'm not mistaken it originated in a (supposedly) highly civilized country that is now one of the bulwarks of the European Union.

I'm not a fan of KMB but I surely commend him on this initiative. At least the govt would have a confirmation on black and white that the majority of the Maltese do not want these immigrants. Please publish details beforehand so people would know where and when to sign. I hope that the petition would not only urge the govt not to accept more immigrants but also make it clear that we do not want those immigrants that already here and that integration is unacceptable to us and completely out of the question.

this is a waist of time and resources!

nothing will be solved not even if all malta, even illegal immigrants themselves sign this petition. beside the fact that there's no constitutional obligations on petitions, it's main objective is to pressure the government and to raise awareness on certian issues.

the government needs no petitions to realise there's a huge problem, they talk to people everyday and illegal immigration is the concern people voice to their elected politicians. government inaction of the situation isn't because they dont know about the problem, but simply because they don't have any idea how to tackle such issue.

people need to realise once and for all, that the solution to this problem is beyond MLPN, no matter how much pressure we put on them!

Illegal immigration is a sad phenomenon; which any sane person, starting with the immigrants themselves, would like to eradicate. These would rather enter Europe legallly or, better still, stay in their countries of origin if only the causes which induce them to leave are eradicated.Thinking that we may stop illegal immigration through a petition is sillier than the belief that a particular dance will cause thunderstorms. Only if the causes of war and poverty are eradicated, will the phenomenon come to an end.

When KMB warned us against a European invasion people laughed him off (though a good number of Eastern Europeans are now working on the islands, without causing any concern to most locals) ; when he thunders against boat-people he is hailed as a modern age of Moses. Can anyone say we are not a racist nation?

I have never had any admiration for KMB however I will sign ANY petition against Illegal Immigrants. At least the Maltese will have an opportunity to vent their feelings as somehow our Prime Minister thinks that their's no urgency in this matter! I hope that we keep in mind that there are many ILLEGAL immigrants including those who enter our shores legally and then 'forget' to leave. I hope that we get to know exactly where and at what time we'll be able to go and sign.

Granted that most adults will sign the petition, but then to whom will it be submitted? To the PM, to Gaddafi? If to the former, I am more than convinced that the PM agrees that we have a problem so much so that Malta has been doing its best with the other EU members to try to share this burden; but these things take alot of time and effort. before they produce results. The problem has to be solved or at least mitigated by roping in Libya and persuading her to stem the flow. But is Libya prepared to accept this mission? The ever-increasing number of arrivals demonstrates that the contrary is the case. Is it perhaps the case that Gaddafi is dead set to increase the Muslim share of the European population as he has been reported to have said? Berlusconi tried to woo Gaddafi by gifts and financial contributions in the hope that the Libyans will start working with the EU team to stop this phenomenon but so far he has drawn a blank. Perhaps Karmenu will try to use his influence with Gaddafi by submitting the petition to him. But does Karmenu have any influence? We'll see.

Can KMB give any proposal of what government can do? If he does not come with any crdeible suggestion (and knowing KMB's track-record of suggesting solutions I emphaise the word credible) then this petition will serve no purpose and will be just another gimmick by CNI.

What Dr Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici is doing makes a lot of sense. In fact, it is a responsible thing to do. Hate him or love him, he is a political man with a great deal of experience, and he knows what he is doing.

Although most of us believe that more than 95% of the population are against illegal immigration, this belief must not remain only notional. Democracy would not function unless people actually came out and presented themselves to cast their vote in writing. A petition operates in the same way.

All that CNI is asking is for the Maltese people to put their conviction in writing, and not just talk about it in the home and public places. A signature is a written statement of intent. When a sufficient number of signatures is gathered, the petition becomes an instrument that represents the will of the people. Neither the Maltese government nor foreign bodies such as the UN will be able to ignore it.

Keep in mind that it is your homeland which is being occupied by illegal immigrants. The onus is on you alone to take action within the law.

Though to be honest, I didn't agreed with KMB when he was in office, I have to admit that with this petition has caught the GonziPN napping, dozing and sleeping.

They are in power thanks to a wafer thin majority and should have done something about this ages ago but showed how weak they are in negoiting a useless deal.

Hats off to Karmenu.

Those Maltese who value the country have to sign this.

Those who think differently and can't see the wood from the trees are either in slumberland or probably it is in their own private interest (cheap, sleazy underhand/undeclared labour) to criticize and avoid signing this petition but they have to know that these illegal immigrant are a serious threat to our future.

We simply don't want them here as we are too small. Full stop!

It is about time to stand up and be counted for the future of Malta and Gozo.

I would suggest that KMB would announce before where he would be with this petition in cities, towns and villages of Malta and Gozo.

This is better than accepting Govt weak foreign policies or by doing nothing at all!

If I were instead of Minister Tonio Fenech I would be more worried about the 273,000,000 deficit, the 3,585,000,000 national debt, the 1,000,000,000 wasted/not collected by the govt. as per auditor and the over 1,000,000,000 deficit in the balance of payments!

Why playing with the people's sentiment? Why giving the impression that the government is happy with the situation?? To be credible CNI must come forward with possible solutions. " To take urgent action to stop migration" - means practically nothing. Therefore I ask them to be more specific.

CNI were present at the press conference when AN launched the 10 point plan of unilateral action the country has to take to stem the problem of illegal immigration and as far as I'm advised they endorsed it.

I would be the first one to sign your petition if this includes concrete suggestions on how we can rid our country of ALL illegal imigrants - including those wo come in as tourists and than remain here working illegally. The petition must also give us a legally binding guarantee that it will be in conformity with our country's International and European obligations.

This petition must also guarantee that illegal imigrants are repatriated to their own countries, and after assurance that they or their families will not face any kind of persecution or prosecution by their governments, for having left their country illegally.

When you publish a draft resolution on the above criteria and after this is scrutinised by our legal profession, such as a retired international/european judge, and this is approved, then you can rest assured of my signature.

Some people make it sound as if Dr Lawrence Gonzi is a dictator, John Portelli is one of them, What action is CNI proposing?I will sign the petition with pleasure once I know what they are proposing, otherwise I won't sign it, strictly speaking I don't trust people like KMB, we have seen a lot of u turns and untruths (the latest when he stated that it was the PN who organised violence in the 80's) Kenneth no one said he is dishonest but he should enjoy his pension in peace.This issue has brought the people together true but then when has an issue which involved the Maltese against another nation not brought us together? Let's hope other stronger parties or groups team up with CNI to make this nation-wide campaign stronger.

The situation with illegal immigration is getting out or control and we already have areas where we are strangers in our own land. Everyone is ok to help those in need, but what we are experiencing is orchestrated illegal business which is seriously threatening our country!

Although I am not a supporter of CNI, I support this initiative. What illegal immigration has done in Malta is brought all people from all walks of life in their massive majority togethr on this issue. I doubt there is another issue that unites the maltese than this issue. Hope the government (meaning Gonzi) is listening.
