I found Lino Spiteri's column (February 24) regarding speed cameras out of tune with the reality of today's traffic and road situation. Yes, there are idiots who abuse the speed limits and there are those who send text messages while driving, and there are those who put their lives before their children by not strapping them into a child seat, but at the end of the day the reality is we have horrendous roads and stupidly low speed limits that do not make sense on major roads.
Yet the authorities concerned still make wrong turns. Motorists want better roads and speed cameras where needed as a deterrent and not a money making machine!
Maltese roads are in a bad if not desperate state of disrepair. The recent spate of patch works after the article on Malta's worst roads just skimmed the surface, such as on the Gudja bypass and Birzebbuga road. They are still in a sorry state with more pot holes than tarmac. I feel this is why people are angry with the speed camera situation - the ADT and Roads Division are going about it the wrong way.
We the motorists are being penalised in so many ways, what with hefty road licenses for private vehicles over 20 horse power, the sorry state of roads, lack of proper parking facilities in major towns and villages, lack of justifiable speed limits according to the specific road.
By all means do put more police and wardens out on the street with hand-held speed cameras, and supply the police with the necessary equipment to help them combat the stupidity of drivers who think they are in a PlayStation game. It is reckless driving and dangerous roads that kill people, not speed on a dual carriageway!
