GRTU Director-General Vince Farrugia and environmentalist Alan Deidun have joined the list of PN candidates for the European Parliament Elections.

The Nationalist Party said their candidacy was approved by the party executive last night.

The PN ticket so far also includes Simon Busuttil, David Casa, Rudolph Cini, Edward Demicoli, Roberta Metsola Tedesco Tricas and Alex Perici Calascione.

Mr Farrugia has a long history of public service under Labour and Nationalist governments. He was head of the National Tourism Organisation under Tourism Minister Joe Grima and head of the Institute of Design for Environmental Action under Education Minister Daniel Micallef in the early 1980s and later also served on IPSE, the institute for small enterprises. He has also served on the boards of various parastatal companies under the present government.

Mr Farrugia is however best remembered for having headed the GRTU's anti-VAT campaign in 1995-96. The introduction of that tax was the main contributor for the PN losing the 1996 election. Mr Farrugia however promoted EU membership ahead of the referendum in 2003.

Dr Deidun has written on environmental matters on The Sunday Times for several years and was recently appointed to head a PN focus group to advise on environmental policy.
