Ryanair to charge toilet fee - or maybe not

Ryanair's chief executive said Europe's largest budget carrier might start charging passengers for using the toilet while flying, but his spokesman cautioned Michael O'Leary often just made things up at will.

"One thing we have looked at in the past and are looking at again is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door so that people might actually have to spend one pound (1.12 euro) to spend a penny in future," O'Leary told BBC television.

He said this would not inconvenience passengers travelling without cash. "I don't think there is anybody in history that has got on board a Ryanair aircraft with less than a pound."

A spokesman said the airline had considered the fee as a possible source of extra revenue since passengers had the option of not using the toilet on board, but added that "maybe O'Leary was just taking the p*ss this morning".

"Michael makes a lot of this stuff up as he goes along and while this has been discussed internally there are no immediate plans to introduce it," Stephen McNamara said in a statement.

O'Leary has a reputation as a cost-cutter, expanding Ryanair by offering low headline fares and charging extra for items such as additional luggage.

Last week, Ryanair announced it was to shut all check-in desks at airports and have passengers check in online instead.

"We're all about finding ways of raising discretionary revenue so we can keep lowering the cost of air travel," he said.

"What's worse than being talked about? ..... NOT being talked about!"

Rest assured that in the not too distant future, we will get another out of O' Liri! (Excuse the Maltese joke...does not translate properly).

Who knows, the next publicity stunt could be about passengers' body weight and that the airfare is calculated on your weight.

Give me a REAL airline anytime!
Mario Busuttil (on 1/3/09)
Go home or else everywhere, but not in Malta we have our good customer flights of our country called AIR MALTA ,,,,,Mr RyanAir
Julian Caruana (on 1/3/09)
Oh that would be just great...

I travel RyanAir at leat 25 times a year to the UK and I don't even know what their loo looks like. So why not!

Finally that nearly incontinent old lady that always sits beside me (10 times per flight) will begin to subsidise my flights out of her Brittish pension!

So yes I'm all for it Michael!
J. Zammit (on 1/3/09)
Hi Mr.O'Leary
Should I informd you if it is NO1 or NO2 so I will be charged accordingly?
What will be the cost to breathe cause that will be next?
Sorry Ryan but I stick to my travel with AirMalta, I get free toilet visits, no cancellation flights, and respect.
Yours

Instead of 'poo-pooing' these ideas, maybe we should try and address the 'tissues'.

[Quote] A. Cassar: Simple!! If you want to use their toilet, first buy a can of beer, drink it and then p** in the can. That way you would have still paid the EURO but at least you would have got a beer.{unquote]

That's all very well but those cans have sharp edges so I don't think they were meant "for skins".

I like the idea of calling their toilets "uRYANals"

Boom! Boom! Who said the rock is humorless?

Christopher Xuereb (on 28/2/09)
Three of us travelling to the UK in 4 weeks time for €260 return, all told and including luggage. Still remember the time when it was virtually impossible to get a return flight to the UK for under Lm120. O'Leary may be a loud mouth and, perhaps, a tad uncouth but thanks to him I can afford to escape this humourless place more often than I could ever do before.

I agree with D.Calascione fly Air Malta people. I think we've seen it all with Ryan Air!! I'm not against RyanAir because the way this company is managed is ingenious and it has contributed to the general public in many ways.

Still there is a difference between good business and being outright hilarious!!
jean wilkins (on 28/2/09)
why not, can't people last out for 3hrs 4 tops without spending a pound, if they didn't have as much booze they wouldn't need the toilet
D.Calascione (on 28/2/09)
Already said this and will keep on saying it... Fly AirMalta and be proud that a so called 'Rock' has its own language, its own AirLine its own... etc etc etc. Come on KM Guys!!! I must praise the very dedicated and hard-working KM Guys for their hard-work, support and some of them work on the Air-Side of LMML and i must say they do their best even in the most worse Weather Conditions...Proset Guys.

Imagine what would happen if there was a miser on that plane...
Jonas Thor (on 27/2/09)
What was not mentioned was the fact that Ryanair will only have one operational toilet on each aircraft. This cost saving idea will reduce airport ramp service charges.
Paul Smith (on 27/2/09)
O"leary was on Radio 4 here in the UK tonight, saying he was taking the P**S ! so he has obviously backed down due to it being all over UK talk Radio today. One listener said she did not mind paying if the seat was ever dry!

P.Zammit, g'day mate, you suggest to get our own tissues, i.m certainly not, i'll probably borrow yours or use 2nd hand once if available . LOL cheer up don't believe everything you read by RyanAir, they are just jelous because they know that one just cannot find better then AIRMALTA. We all know by now that Ryanair got hidden extras, and we know where they are hidding them. Its now called i believe BogAir
John Grima (on 27/2/09)
I do not know if you are aware of Ryanair's announcement today in London, In this latest announcement Ryanair have said that whitin 1 year they will only allow 10 kilos of luggage per passenger and that will include a handbag. Any extra pieces of luggage will be charged at £60 per item. You can forget shopping holidays if you use Ryanair.
T Mifsud (on 27/2/09)
Hey everybody, watch it coming! O'Leary or Cawley will appear very soon in The Times as one of the following: - a huge Ryanair advert - a reply/rebuttal by one of the two or even just a letter against Air Malta - an announcement of some sort, free tickets, new route, government lobbying etc - a financial bed time story of Ryanair This is typical
philip pace (on 27/2/09)
Would the same Michael O'Leary be spending a pound to urinate? I would spend a pound on his airlines only to find it difficult to do urinate especially when there is air turbulence as you know what would happen.. But thinking again I would never use Ryanair. Any other airline would do for me.
J Agius (on 27/2/09)
Will passengers soon be asked also to chose from travelling standing up or siting down for an additional cost?
Jesmond Micallef (on 27/2/09)
And Mr. Michael O'Leary gets richer and richer !! He travels private, with private toilet, private schedule, etc etc etc....... Thanks to whom.???................us slave to the money idiots !!! But thanks god I have a choice, naturally Air Malta !!
P.Zammit (on 27/2/09)
I doubt if this will ever pass. If challenged in a court, I am sure it would not be allowed. Worse case they put bog roll. So what, get your own tissues.

This is a no issue. Typical of the whimsical Ryanair CEO. He is just "p*ssing" about and not paying the one pund for it!
Charles Sammut (on 27/2/09)
Would that make a drink filtered by the body more expensive than when it was still in the can? Pardon the pun. The aluminium can of course.
David Meilak (on 27/2/09)
It doesn't matter what Ryan Air charges and for what they charge............what 's important is that these days we all have a choice and it is the different airlines that are scrambling towards us clients to flu with them............I remember when we had no choice except Airmalta's 'sky high' (excuse the pun) prices and a couple of other airlines.

If you like Ryan air fly with them....if u don't...........you don't have to............

This is the same with mobile phone companies...........for example I can never go back to a company in Malta that once had a monopoly in mobile phones...........but that is a personal opinion..........
Joe Grima (on 27/2/09)
Michael O'Leary is a master at getting free publicity. He's at it again.
Matthew Borg Cardona (on 27/2/09)
This is a Free publicity stunt - like the "Letter to the Editor" claiming that Cafe Jubilee are now advertising on the Piccadilly Circus billboards .... ooops there it goes again ... more free publicity for Cafe Jubilee .... these stunts really work nicely. Me likes ... great minds ! :))
michael stockdale (on 27/2/09)
Good look to Ryanair i think it is about time they started charging to use the toilet.I fly every week with them i always go to the toilet before i board the plane there is nothing more irritating than people rushing to the toilet when the seat belt sign has been turned off.People should take a little time out and use the toilet while they are waiting in the departure lounge. I am fed up of been proded and knocked because people cannot sit down for long.I eally hope Ryanair start charging people 5 euros each time they want to go it will teach them to go before they get on the plane
R. Gauci (on 27/2/09)
Come on, unbelievable, people complain if they save by flying Ryanair or buying from LIDL, get a life, thank god we have these options today, otherwise in this recession we would be home starring at the wall!!! Ryanair is probably the best thing that happened to Malta.. So what you have to pay more for extra weight? take only your hand lugguage. I paid 57 euros incl taxes to go to Venice, what do I care, service was good, i had a drink got one for free, whats your problem? AirMalta has been overcharging us for too long!!!!
Eric Soames (on 27/2/09)
How much to join the Mile High Club?
Olliver Vassallo (on 27/2/09)
Dear Ryanair, not original at all. Over two millennia ago Emperor Vespasianus placed a tax on urine , useful due to its ammoniac content, collected from public urinals, in Italian called "vespasiani". On being criticised by his son Titus about the smell, he replied: Pecunia non olet" (Money does not have a bad smell". I suggest you rename your urinals "Ryans"!
Andrew Gatt (on 27/2/09)
May I suggest a set of weighing scales at the entrance to the toilet? Upon exiting, you're weighed again and the net loss will be deducted from excess baggage charges !

Whatta loada crap!
P. Cortis (on 27/2/09)
Use Air Malta, the best..
Andre Bianchi (on 27/2/09)
Gosh........

Whilst Michael O'Leary was speaking, the share price of Europe's leading adult nappy brand went through the roof........gotta go.......calling my equities broker now.

This will now be known as the O'Leary effect.
A Anderson (on 27/2/09)
I am in favour of using AirMalta. They are very reliable - delays are not normal. Yet sometimes they fail to make the most of their business.

An example: Cutting their London Stansted route gives an opportunity to both RyanAir or Easyjet to take it up.

And on the flypass brochure AirMalta is still advertising this route!
Brian Maloret (on 27/2/09)
Eric Frendo (47 minutes ago)
will the charge be standard? or depending on the output?

Don't give Mr O'Leary any further ideas of raising more money from passengers. To be charged by output would mean measuring the output. This could be done by a meter which the passenger would rent at the departing airport and attached to his/her body. On arrival at destination the meter would be read and the passenger charged for the output they have made. lol
albert leone ganado (on 27/2/09)
I have noticed on recent short flights that often ryanair leaves the "keep your seatbelt sign on" with the excuse that there is air turbulence so that passengers cannot use the toilet. On a recent flight I pitied a young family with a child repeatedly asking to go to the toilet until the inevitable happened.

As I get older I would rather have a coin operated loo and pay a euro and be guaranteed availability than have it kept shut with a lame excuse.
Chris Finch (on 27/2/09)
I'll just take an empty bottle and use that instead. Or fly with another airline. Recently I travelled to UK with my wife and baby on Air Malta. It was the first time we had travelled with the baby and the Flight Attendants were first class. And after all the price additions and extra hassle you get with Ryan Air, the AirMalta tickets were much better value in comparison.
In future to the UK I will only use Air Malta. Prosit AM and a big thank-you to all the staff on both outward and inbound flights.
D.Walsh (on 27/2/09)
What if i use our own disposable toilet facilities, the one we use in a caravan, surely thats alowed?, reason being i take special high blood pressure tablets to make me go more often thus getting rid of excessive salts. Dave Walsh (pensioner)
L..Galea (on 27/2/09)
Where are the proponents of low cost airlines?
Cheap prices gets you cheap service and higher cost.
Joe Tabone-Adami (on 27/2/09)
Selling low-cost beer during flights will certainly help raise toilet-use revenue, won't it!
Michael Spiteri (on 27/2/09)
@ All
Mark my words...this is a free advertisement.
P. Camilleri (on 27/2/09)
Moaning won't get you anywhere...... just don't travel with them.... I use decent airlines such as Airmalta & Lufthansa whenever I can.... but never with Ryanair....
Eric Frendo (on 27/2/09)
"since passengers had the option of not using the toilet on board" can passengers be charged less for a fare and stay standing up?
jcmicallef (on 27/2/09)
Now that's what I call turning crap into money!
Andrew Cachia (on 27/2/09)
I have traveled on Ryanair and Airmalta many times... Beleive me, On Ryanair i have never paid near as close to what i have paid on Airmalta. ( Even with Ryanair's "extras")

Obviously, i prefer Airmalta, but if i find a bargain on Ryanair, then i go for it. Id like to add that the legroom on Airmalta has been cut down alot... Ryanair is more comfy by far.

The GBP1.00 for a toilet visit doesnt go down really well, but hey, i hardly use the toilet on an airplane anyway...so it makes no difference to me.

@ E Pulis...

As to Mr O'Leary resigning... i say to you, GET A LIFE ! Mr O Leary can do whatever he wishes...its up to you to travel with Ryanair or not !
J Farrugia (on 27/2/09)
and this ryanair CEO insulted airmalta for charging more than they do ? Better maintenance of aircraft, better services, better flights with no hiccups, Give me a hundred airmaltas and not even one Ryanair. Empty vessels make most sound.
Eric Frendo (on 27/2/09)
will the charge be standard? or depending on the output?
E. Pulis (on 27/2/09)
An empty bottle has never been so handy!
Also, what if you need to change your baby's diaper? 2 pounds please!
O'Leary should resign

selling pooh pooh bags at the airport prior departure for only 25c.........anyone interested please send your CV to Mr O'Leary!
Andrew Zammit Manduca (on 27/2/09)
Dear Mr O'Leary,

By any chance Ryanair is loosing money so you are trying to see how you are going to cheat people. You seam to be an expert in that and come up with the most stupid ways to do so. Are you sure you are a low cost airline. I don't even know how they let you do these stupid things. Why don't you add a charge for everytime the cabin crew help someone or even better why don't you start charging people to use the seat belt or the arm rest.
A Abela (on 27/2/09)
I have flown on Ryanair, never needed to use the toilet, and had no problems.

If you want Ryanair to leave Malta, and the tourists attached with it disappear, keep arguing against it. Otherwise, just travel with Air Malta, and don't complain that the price is expensive.

Whoever wishes to travel with Ryanair has every right to do so.
Andre Bianchi (on 27/2/09)
Well times are getteing tough, even for Michael O'Leary's Ryanair.

I am a huge fan of Michael O'Leary's sense of humour especially when he features in his own ads, but I am not sure if he is cracking us up with laughter or moving with the hard times, like Wall Street.

Do the safety regulations permit us to board the flight holding our own potty ?
S Debono (on 27/2/09)
I'll just relieve myself in the seat pocket then. Their planes are pisspots anyways!
James Drury (on 27/2/09)
Shall there also be a supplement for opening the window, seat and life jackets?

SIMPLY PATHETIC!!!
Ivan Falzon (on 27/2/09)
Dear Mr O'Leary,

How about charging passengers for using the stairs going up/down the plane. With your reasoning passengers have the option not to use the stairs.....they can simply jump off the plane.

Paul Vella (on 27/2/09)
The SCROOGE airline !! Ok it's low cost but there is a limit.
C Mallia (on 27/2/09)
If this is some kind of crude advertising from Ryanair, then thats what people will conclude.

I hope that they are not cutting costs at the expense of safety and security as well.
Brian Maloret (on 27/2/09)
Ryanair might like to let people think that they are a "budget" airline but are they? They seem to be constantly looking at what "extras" that they can charge passengers for. This proposal for charging passengers £1 to use the toilet is in my opinion scraping the bottom of the barrel. What would happen if a passenger travelling alone wanted to desperately use the toilet but was not carrying any cash?
Paul Vella (on 27/2/09)
I would not put it past them....which gives me more reason not to travel with them!!
carmel debono (on 27/2/09)
Will there be a charge for the toilet paper I wonder?
lir-rhis gholi?
Keith Goodlip (on 27/2/09)
Whats next paying for the air you use?

A person would measure your lung capacity and charge you accordingly.

Low Cost.....my....
