PN approves economist, biologist for Euro elections

Eight candidates, possibly more

The Nationalist Party's executive committee yesterday approved the candidatures of economist Vincent Farrugia and biologist Alan Deidun for June's European Parliament elections.

The PN now had eight candidates for the EP elections, though the list might not yet be final, sources close to the party said.

The other six confirmed candidates are incumbents David Casa and Simon Busuttil and Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas, Edward Demicoli, Alex Perici Calascione and Rudolph Cini.

The outspoken director general of the Malta Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises - GRTU, Mr Farrugia, 64, had been toying with the idea of entering the political fray since December, when The Sunday Times revealed that he had been approached by the party to contest the EP election.

The PN had also invited Dr Deidun to join the list.

Dr Deidun, who lectures at the University of Malta, was recently appointed to chair a PN focus group to discuss climate change. He has been a regular columnist of The Sunday Times since March 2002, compiling The Green Whistle Blower column.
