British amphibious assault ship HMS Bulwark has entered Grand Harbour at the head of a task group including two Royal Navy and one French Navy frigates.

The Bulwark is the second of a new class of assault ships commissioned into the Royal Navy.

The name, however, is familiar with the many Maltese who served in the Royal Navy. The previous Bulwark, a helicopter carrier, was a frequent visitor to Grand Harbour.

Video above shows the arrival of the task force and an aerial view of the previous Bulwark leaving Grand Harbour in 1972. (Photo sent by Howard Davies, who served on the ship as Chief Petty Officer).

The ships accompanying the Bulwark in Malta are HMS Argyll, HMS Somerset and FNS Dupleix.

HMS Bulwark, berthed at Lascaris Wharf, will open for visitors tomorrow between 1-5 p.m.
