The announcement of the launching of a Palestinian national dialogue as called for by President Abbas was this evening welcomed by the government.

The announcement was made in Cairo yesterday.

The government said it believes this was a very positive step to restore the unity of the Palestinian national project in its internationally recognised legitimacy.

It reiterated its willingness to support the results of this process, and called on the international community to continue to help President Abbas bring it to fruition.

It congratulated Egypt for the determined efforts it was deploying, with the backing of the Arab League, to support this process, which Malta considered a crucial element in reviving the hopes for peace in the region.
