Joseph Ebejer was this afternoon sworn in as Data Protection Commissioner.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici told journalists that in the coming days Mr Ebejer would also assume the responsibilities imposed under the Freedom of Information Act.

He said that the public were conscious, more than ever before, of its right to privacy. He said he was convinced Mr Ebejer would transform the challenge his new role was presenting into an opportunity to strengthen the Data Protection Office.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici also paid tribute to the the late Paul Mifsud Cremona, who was Data Protection Commissioner till the day he died.
