Mobile structures formerly used by earthquake victims in Italy are being set up within Ħal Far's open centre to replace some of the tents which have become the homes of immigrants.

The 50 structures, donated by the Italian government, used to house two families in each. However, they are now being turned into dormitories with space for 16 beds.

Made of aluminium, the semi-permanent structures will be offering a sturdier place for immigrants to sleep in, while communal bathrooms and kitchens will continue to be used. The structures will eventually replace the tents, which have been known to get torn and damaged in high winds. But a spokesman for the Home Affairs Ministry said the tents will not be removed yet since the open centre is currently full.
