I am a postgraduate student reading History of Art at the University of Malta and currently carrying out research on the private works of Giuseppe Calì, the subject of my dissertation.

Calì was a prolific Maltese artist working in the late 19th and early 20th century, who managed to satisfy his commissioner's tastes by combining the importance of clarity and good draughtsmanship without losing its sensuous appeal.

Calì secured a wide range of commissions on the island even though there was a notable preference for Italian artists at the time. He owes his reputation mainly to the numerous paintings he produced for churches all over Malta and Gozo.

The research I am undertaking seeks to uncover a different aspect of the artist's output.

It will involve a thorough examination of the works produced for private patrons or which are now in private ownership, which still remains largely unstudied.

This study will include works of all genres and mediums, including sketches, paintings, lithographs, sculptures, scenography and any other decorative work.

By studying Calì's various works in private collections and comparing them to his church commissions as well as works by other contemporary artists, it will be possible to come up with a holistic understanding of the artist.

I hope readers will be kind enough to help me in my search for all kinds of private commissions by Calì.

All information disclosed to me will remain confidential and will only feature in the dissertation through the informed consent of the owner.

When permission is granted for the works to form part of the dissertation, the ownership and location of the works will not be disclosed. For this purpose please call me on 7900 0072 or e-mail mmg46@hotmail.com
