Attempts to gain a trip the US away from family problems in Malta only managed to get 30-year-old Nazir Mustafa al Gadi, of Birkirkara, a two year prison term suspended for four.

Mr al Gadi this morning pleaded guilty to filing a false police report. Police inspector Jeffrey Cilia told the Court that Mr al Gadi had gone to the US Embassy with an alleged document from the Libyan police requesting him to make illicit surveillance on the embassy and take photos of it.

Mr al Gadi went to the embassy and told them he would not do what he was being asked to and requested to be taken to the US under a witness protection programme.

Mr al Gadi was in the news this week as the victim of an incident with a cyclist who is being accused of trying to kill him.
