The Malta Canoe Federation (MCF) will be heralding the kayak season with its annual event, the Manoel Island Race, to be held on March 8 at the Sliema Strand.

Registration and a race briefing will be given at 8.30 a.m. with races starting at 9 a.m.

There will be three main races, a 10K race consisting of three laps, a 3K single lap event and a 200m sprint. Participants will be divided according to boat classification and category.

The forthcoming event is not open only to frequent paddlers as beginners also view this race as an ideal opportunity for a first competitive taste of kayak racing.

Besides, the Manoel Island Race has attracted increased international interest in recent years, with participants from Italy and Germany providing good competition for local athletes. It is anticipated that this year's event will see the participation of clubs from Europe, the MCF said.

There are a limited number of kayaks available for those who do not have their own equipment. Those interested in using the club equipment, are to register by March 4.

Application forms are available on www.maltacanoefederation.org. For further details one may contact Nicki Borg Costanzi on 9946-9014.
