Three crewmen were injured when a routine lifeboat-launching exercise on board a cargo ship off Malta went wrong early this afternoon.

Informed sources said the rope on one side of the lifeboat gave way.

The ship, the Stavenger Prince, was 12 nautical miles off Malta at the time.

The crewmen, all foreigners, were brought to Malta on helicopters flown by crews from the Italian Military Mission and the AFM.

The AFM said the sailors - two filippinos and an Indian - had suffered broken legs and arms and suspected severe spinal injuries.
