Stall owner admits punching Consumer Affairs official
The owner of a stall at the Cospicua open market was conditionally discharged today after admitting he punched an official of the Consumer and Competition Division.
The incident developed earlier today after the stall owner, Elton Briffa, 20, was found not to be displaying the prices of the items for sale.
He admitted punching the official and assaulting and threatening two market surveillance officers of the Consumer and Competition Division.
The Finance Ministry in a statement condemned the incident and what it said was a subsequent incident where the Assistant-Director of the division was insulted over the phone because the division was doing its duty.
The ministry expressed its solidarity with the employees.

@ Mr. Philip Pace,
1. Thank you for thinking that my suggestion was ' puerile '.
2. Have you got any better ideas on how these officers can be protected when carrying out their official duties by trying to enforce the law in markets, shops, supermarkets, business companies, etc.
3. Whose side are you on anyway, or dont you consider yourself as a consumer who requires protection from abuses.
4. Although I do not know any of these officers, would you talk like this if it was your son who got a fist in his face and be injured whilst performing his official duty, with the aim of protecting consumers from abuses.

My solidarity to the injured employees!
Is this the message our suppose Law Courts want to send to the Law Obeying Citizen? That's the reason why everyone can do what he wants and there's no accountability in our country!!

We would have expected this to be an opportunity to give out a clear message that such behaviour is not tolerated. These were officials. The crime is worse than road rage, but no clemency is shown for the latter. The owner punched one, and assaulted and threatened the other two. Are we going soft in the head?

Whilst portraying Cospicua in bad light because of this incident, no mention is made to from which village or town the hawker hails from.

I think that it is a puerile suggestion.
Policeman or armed forces personnel have other important things to do.

No wonder law enforcement is weak in Malta with stories such as this

Could Consumer Affairs Department officials please also check whether prices are being displayed at the cafeterias of MIA's departure lounge near the departure gates? Particularly prices of small bottles of wine, packets of crisps, etc?

Why ONLY conditionally discharged, why not even a fine to serve as a lesson. If its not in the law, it should be. Why should an officer from the Consumer Affairs Division be injured, maybe even permanently, while doing his work ? How can we have consumer protection with sentences like this in court, which may lower the morale of these officers to continue enforcing the law ?
I suggest that after this incident, these officers should be accompanied either by a policeman or personnel from the armed forces when doing this type of work.
