UPDATED: Military funeral on Wednesday
The Mass held this morning at Lyster Barracks.
A military funeral is to be held on Wednesday for Gunner Matthew Psaila, who passed away early this morning after almost drowning at Chadwick Lakes last Friday, the AFM said. Funeral Mass will be said at 2 p.m. at St John of the Cross Parish Church, Ta' Xbiex, followed by interment at the servicemen's graves at the Addolorata Cemetery.
During a military funeral, the deceased is carried by army pall bearers. At the cemetery, the coffin is carried on a gun carriage and a salute is accorded.
A memorial service for Gunner Psaila was held this morning at Hal Far Barracks, home of 'C' Special Duties Company, in which he served. Those present included AFM commander Brigadier Carmel Vassallo and the Director of Defence, Vanessa Frazier. Flags at AFM headquarters and the various AFM barracks are flying at half mast.
Gunner Psaila, who would have been 20 next week, reportedly fell into the water and was submerged for some 10 minutes during a military exercise.
He was an enthusiastic member of 'C' Special Duties Company but his family told The Sunday Times yesterday that he could not swim.
The exercise consisted of teamwork, carrying logs and surmounting water and land obstacles. Psaila was carrying a 20kg backpack and his rifle when he fell into the water.
Serving in the army had been Matthew Psaila's life-long dream. He enlisted last March and took part in his pass-out parade in November. He volunteered to join 'C' Company and was undergoing infantryman's training.
The soldier was in intensive care throughout his period in hospital. An officer and members of his family were by his side. Members of his family have expressed appreciation for the presence, for many hours, of Brig Vassallo.
A magisterial inquiry and an internal AFM inquiry are in progress.
Matthew's brother Joseph, in a comment to this website (see below) on behalf of his parents expressed his appreciation for all the calls and messages they got from friends and family members.
"I would also like to show our appreciation for all the hard working and committed staff at the ITU who did all they could and more for my brother. May he rest in peace - he died doing that which he loved most in life, farewell and goodbye Matthew!"
Fatal accidents on active duty are rare. Some years ago an AFM sentry was killed as a result of the negligent discharge of a firearm by a colleague in Gozo.
In 1984 five soldiers and two policemen died when a quantity of firework exploded while it was being carried on a patrol boat to be dumped at sea.

“Have you news of my boy Jack?”
Not this tide.
“When d’you think that he’ll come back?”
Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.
“Has any one else had word of him?”
Not this tide.
For what is sunk will hardly swim,
Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.
“Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?”
None this tide,
Nor any tide,
Except he did not shame his kind —
Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide.
Then hold your head up all the more,
This tide,
And every tide;
Because he was the son you bore,
And gave to that wind blowing and that tide!
A 1915 poem by Rudyard Kipling who wrote it after his beloved son, John (called Jack) went missing in the Battle of Loos, during World War I.
I've never met you, my friend. But somehow I know you so well. Maybe because of my time in the AFM. Or because, like yourself, I'm so proud of having served in the Army. Or because we both understood the bond of Brothers in Arms. We'll Always Be Our Special Band of Brothers. RIP My Friend.
Condolences to your family and relatives.

losing a son is painful. i had my son for few days hospitalized and i was going crazy. i wish we all can help the family. how about a fund to assist this family. i am sure money will not bring your son back. i adore passion we maltese can show in such situations, blue red or green. malta is a great country with human people.
i will pray for matthew.

REMEMBER.........! You sleep safe in your beds at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would do us harm.........! Gnr Mathew Psaila was training to become one of those men. Please save a prayer for Mathew before you go to bed tonight.
RIP mate. See you at the FRV.

Dear Matthew, i dont know you, but i feel a deep sadness about your death. Everyday i have to pass twice from Chadwick Lakes, since monday i look at the site and keep thinking what a tragedy had happened here a few hours earlier, that a beautiful young man has lost his life here and it really hurts. I can just imagine what your family is going through at the moment. I wish them all the strenght they need in this difficult time, may their future be filled with love, pride, honour and peace in their hearts. I am not a believer in god, but if there is a one, i am sure you are near him, let him take care of you now. My deepest sympathy to your mum, dad and brother xxx

God has chosen to take a hero from us prematurely - my sincere condolences to all his family. I join the ranks of all Maltese in grieving his sad loss. His name shall be added to that of all those who fell in performing their duty for our beloved country.
To quote Lawrence Binyon;
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor old age condemn,
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Martin I believe you know who I am. May you all find the courage and strength to get through the funeral. I just wish I could express the deep loss everyone is feeling to his parents and his brother, the deep loss of a good soldier and a good person.
God rest his soul.

@ D Xuereb. - As Matthew's Uncle, and with Joseph, Matthew's brother sitting next to me, we applaud your perfect contribution, which echoes exactly everything we are feeling. Anything else said is superfluous at this stage. Thank You and thanks to all who have expressed sympathy and solidarity in this difficult period of our lives.

A tragedy has occured where a dedicated young man lost his life doing what he had closest to his heart. Let us applaud the fact that he faced his biggest demon by entering those waters and because of that we can get a glimpse of what kind of person he was, a dedicated, strong willed person, a credit to any institution and parent. A true soldier because I truly believe joining the army is a vocation and not just a job. Any soldier can tell you that.
Instead of pointing fingers and speculating we should let the inquest do it's job. No one asks what the army does, no one knows how dedicated all of them are and how much they are committed to their jobs, from the highest ranking officer to the lowest. The army does not go to press every time they do something heroic or worth applauding. Think with your minds and not what everyone feeds you.
To his family, as a mother,my heart goes out to all of you. I keep thinking what if that man was my child and it is too heart wrenching to think about

My heart does go out to Matthew's family. Being a mother, I can't help feeling mostly for Matthew's mom. I recommend her to Our Lady of Sorrows, as Our Lady knows exactly what this mother is going through. I pray that all the family will feel the Lord's presence in all of this...that they will find peace in this tragedy. As believers, we believe in after life after this one...I am certain that Matthew is living life to the fullest with the Lord. I am certain that Matthew is in the Lord's arms now. This is the consolation for the family. I will pray for Matthew and for the family that they may find comfort. My thoughts (and that of all Malta...that I'm sure of) are with you all.

Matthew always had the army at heart even back in form 1 when we used to attend St.Elias College together. His dream for life was to serve his country... how many of us can say he/she has reached their life's dream, or have served and paid for their country?? Matthew did just that!! I for one have not yet reached my dream and probably never will... I do not pitty Matthew, I feel proud that I knew someone who in his very short life reached for the sky and touched it, through hard work and sacrifice.
In writing this I hope to speak for all our old class mates - all I know are thinking of Matt and his family. Your memory will not be forgotten, forever in our Minds and Hearts. Rest in Peace friend.

I cannot forget his smile and the sparkle in his eyes... My deepest sympathy to all his loved ones. How sad, my condolences to friends and family.
Though many of life's pleasures
May change from year to year,
Special people never change at all
Except to grow more dear.
And just like cherished memories
They have a place apart,
A place reserved forever
In a corner of the heart.

God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
I would like to pray for Matthew's family and friends, and must deal with the grief of their loved one gone from their lives...I pray Lord you comfort them in their time of grief....show them You stand beside them in this difficult time.
Bless his family with peace and comfort as they cope with the emptiness that has been left in their lives....fill that void with joy, happiness and remind them of the courage and bravery of their wonderful son and brother Matthew....
Rest in Peace Matthew.

It is so sad when an accident of his nature occurs. I do agree that before joining the army one has to know certain necessities like swimming, and even so the army should have it in the questionnaire, and if one cannot swim they should help the volunteer to do so. What happened is a lesson to all of us and WE MUST NOT BLAME ANYONE, for what happened. Punishing his superiors is an act our dear departed Mathew would sadly refuse, for although he is not with us does not mean it is the end for him, as it is only the beginning. Let us all meditate for a moment and memorize him as the kid with a great smile on his face that always wanted to be a soldier. Perhaps we should focus more on respecting men and women in uniform, for their true purpose is to protect our people on this sacred Island. Farewell my brother for now, for when my time is up we shall meet in eternity for we are all truly one flame. My condolences go as well to his family

I met you one fine day on March 3 years ago. It was real destiny to meet you and find such a great person in you. We were great friends, we laughed, joked, picked on each other continuously. When you sneaked in some of my lectures to make me company, they were always entertaining with you whispering funny remarks by my side while the teacher gave us weird looks. The anecdotes about our shared moments are infinite. Almost 2 years ago we were on a bench and you told me about your plans for the future. When you asked me what I thought about them I told you - to follow your heart desires. Sometimes I regret not pushing you further in coming with us at UNI. Your last gift was your origami plane with your Dark Knight cinema ticket which we watched last August... I missed you whenever we didn't talk for some time, but somehow we always met again... you'll always be with us. You who didn't like much attention, just like your own hero Col.Winters, you had to be on all our media ... unluckily for the worse. RIP and pray for us Matt.

RIP dear Mathew. As a citizen in uniform Mathew paid the ultimate price for his diligence and loyalty to the AFM, hence toward our society. It is with sadness to note that only through Mathew's ultimate price that our society became aware of the duties and hardships of our citizens in uniform (soldiers). Then again it is especially in such sad moments that makes me proud to be Maltese more than ever. All the nation is praying for Mathew and his family. The sense of solidarity and support shown by one and all is of utmost importance for the family. That what being Maltese is all about. By now mathew is already recruited into the Lord's army of angels patroling us on earth to ensure that when our time comes we can all join him on the right side of the lord. I wish to express my deepest and sincere condolences to the family of Matthew Psaila. And at the same time register my disgust at the inability of the CO & NCOs to ensure that the men under their command were safe at all times. If the exercise was to test the physical stamina of the men it was their responsibility to assess and neutralise any risk along the endurance course!

In life, accidents happen, but when a life is lost it is called a tragedy. The loss to Matt's family cannot quantitatively be measured because it is soul deep and indeterminate in its duration.
May I join many others expressing their condolences to Matt's family and friends. To lose someone that young in pursuit of his career is indeed sad. In the future every measure should be taken so that there will be no repeat of such a tragedy.

Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. 'Forward the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!' he said: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. 'Forward, the Light Brigade!' Was there a man dismayed? Not though the soldier knew Some one had blundered: Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them Cannon in front of them Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred. Flashed all their sabres bare, Flashed as they turned in air Sabring the gunners there, Charging an army, while All the world wondered: Plunged in the battery-smoke Right through the line they broke; Cossack and Russian Reeled from the sabre-stroke Shattered and sundered. Then they rode back, but not Not the six hundred. From a fellow soldier - may you rest in eternal peace, deepest sympathies to immediate family, relatives and friends

Theres a bond that you cannot see
for its not bound with twine
Its formed from strands within our souls
this love thats yours and mine
When i went home to be with God
You must now understand
I took with me this bond of love
and i still hold that strand
So now look at my photograph
My smile you will quickly see
But only hearts can see the strand
Forever binding you and me
Enjoy the Precious Memories
although we are apart
We will share more joys again one day
I believe that with all my heart .

When the AFM have a new recruit, one of the first things they should know about him is wether he knows how to swim, and if he doesn't, they should teach him. I think that it is imperative that all members of the AFM should know how to swim. In the name of my family, I send our condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

One small suggestion to whomever takes decisions at the Armed Forces.
Can we rename the "C Special Duties Company" as the "Psaila Platoon" in honour of this dedidated young soldier ?
He would surely be a guiding light for all the boys in uniform.

All armies suffer accidental loses of personnel on training or active duty, although it's unacceptable. Casualty rates in theatres of conflict like Iraq or Afghanistan also show this clearly. Soldiering is risky business, for which this young lad had clearly volunteered. Maltese society isn't fully appreciative of this through respect for its armed services. They deserve so much more than our words, a medal, or a sporadic wage increase or delayed promotions in the ranks. They always need better hardware and personal kit, improved welfare and training standards. Fluid modern training must include risk-analysis, after-action reviews & recertification of the trainers themselves. A jolt as it may be, this tragic incident must serve the general better good of AFM soldiers on all future operations.

Young Matthew has gone to a better place. The Lord wanted him to be with him rather than leave him suffering the consequences of the accident. Surely young Matthew does not need our prayers, we need his. What he surely will be doing is to console his beautifu family his brother father and mother. There are no words that could be saids, only time will, if ever, cure the great wound inflicted on his relatives. A happy family finding herself without the usual good humor of one of two sons. Yes only time will try to cure the wound though he will never be forgotten. Let us pray for his fmily in this moment of great grief.

My blood chilled when I learnt that Matthew passed away. I had hopes that he would recover but fate wanted different things. It is a tragedy beyond belief. My heart goes out to the parents and his loved ones. It is a very difficult time for Matt's mum and dad. Lord please watch over Matt's parents, it must be so painful what they are going through right now.

I knew Matthew from school and he sure was a nice guy. He always wanted to join the army and I can still remember when I always advised him to continue his studies... But he still was so stubborn and made his dream come true... though for a short time.
I will miss him even though we lost contact for some time. He was still a person that you'll never forget.
My deepest sympathy to Matthew's family! May God be with you all during these such painful days.

Matt has now joined the Lord's Legions in the Sky, and will not doubt be looking over his mates and buddies still in the Service.
The esprit-de-corps of these fine young men, rallying together around their chum's demise is a remarkable rare moment of unity and fraternity for those in uniform.
Lest we not forget the sacrifices Maltese soldiers give at times of peace or crises, they have never failed the Nation and its people.
All are heroes in my credo, and they have my fullest respect. Matthew Psaila, we salute you, help us keep our gunpowder dry for that moment of truth!

Quote from Article: "The exercise consisted of teamwork"
Quote from a commenter: "I ask: is there such a thing as the Buddy System obtaining in the AFM?"
My thoughts exactly. If the news and the AFM describe it as a teamwork, then where's the buddy system involved? If one makes a diving course, first rule ALWAYS take someone with you. If you go to Scouts, during a hike, there's ALWAYS a headcount to know if people are missing or not. So I wonder, if divers and children between 7-15 years old can make a buddy system, why not the AFM who are actually trained in this kind of thing? or are Supposed to be trained....
He was an intelligent young man, always cheerful, a good classmate and a better friend to everyone. U won't be forgotten, Psaila tana Computing A level Class Junior College 2005-2007.

It's a tragedy for the young man, for the family and for the nation. At moments such as these one needs to hold back angry comments about rolling heads. The authorities are investigating and seeking the facts of the matter. let s all just be sad, and not angry. if any human being erred in the course of this tragedy, let no other human be his or her judge. the weight of any if any error should not be judged by the weight of the consequence. I am very close to the family ,as close as can be, and am not being an apologist for anybody, but rationality should prevail. Please do not allow rash statements based on emotion to turn this comments page into a trial by mob. Express grief not anger. Its what Matthew would have wanted.

He is Gone
You can shed tears
that he is gone or
You can smile
because he has lived.
You can close your eyes
and pray that he'll come back or
You can open your eyes
and see all he's left.
Your heart can be empty
because you can't see him or
You can be full
of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on
tomorrow and live yesterday or
You can be happy for tomorrow
because of yesterday.
You can remember him
and only that he's gone or
You can cherish his memory
and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back or
You can do what he'd want:
Smile, Open your Eyes, Love
and go on...

Reading this news has put me into tears.Being a mother of a 22 yr old, I can just image the grief of his family who has lost a son in this tender age. Let us all who believe in the power of prayer, keep this family and dear Matthew in our hearts and prayers.

Matthew you showed respect to your work and you wished to work in this type of work. You felt to do everything to keep on moving.

Sadness...tears...anger...disappointment...solidarity....hope....justice...dreams....God.
If there is a God (and I do believe that there is) He must surely be hugging this fine guy from Malta. HE must also be somewhat sad that in order to save this fine guy from the rottening future of this rotten lifestlyle of ours, HE has to leave a family sadly devastated by the sudden loss of their treasure.
Although I've never known this fine young man, I find myself in tears.
To the family.......seek no justice.....it will never come.
Your consolation lies in the knowledge that all Maltese of good will are really sharing your suffering and praying for you.
