Sharon Ellul Bonici launches MEP campaign
Sharon Ellul Bonici, who until recently worked as a consultant for the Eurosceptic Independence/ Democracy group, launched her campaign for the MEP elections yesterday by calling on voters to look beyond the "yes versus no" EU campaign "of the past".
Ms Ellul Bonici said she had adopted Labour's line against membership five years ago because she felt it was not the right time for Malta to join the EU. Clearly, the public felt otherwise and she respected that.
"Some maintain that I am still critical of the EU. But I look at it from a critical lens to bring issues to the surface with the aim of improvement. This doesn't mean that I will not be willing to do anything for the benefit of the country," she said.
Ms Ellul Bonici said she felt the government was not doing enough to ensure that Malta succeeded within the EU and, if elected, she and her team would take on that role.
Labour leader Joseph Muscat, who was also present, said the party's MEP candidates had to overcome people's "scepticism", given that the party had lost the last general election and had since undergone big internal changes.
"My appeal to the PL MEP candidates is to listen to the people and reflect their concerns so that they will be able to lead them and be proud representatives of socialism in the EU," Dr Muscat said.
Ms Ellul Bonici was the founder of the NO2EU campaign before Malta's EU referendum and has lived in Brussels for the past five years. She also had a short stint as assistant to Labour MEP John Attard Montalto.
She resigned from the Independence/Democracy group a few weeks ago after she was confirmed as a PL candidate for the Party of European Socialists.

We are not easily offended, don't worry about that. And by the way, if its a Rottweiler, its must be of a good pedigree, otherwise it wouldn't be so.
In the coming months we will have the opportunity to establish who is a Chihuahua or a Rottweiller between Sharon and the other PN candidates. Pleasure Yet to come!
@ Dr. Andy Ellul - Rottweiler... yes! But of a good pedigree and I do not mean to offend your sister however in my eyes she is far from a Rottweiler... actually more like a timid chihuahua who's tail is between its legs as though its being haunted by something... THE PAST!!!!!
Perhaps she might be so. She is certainly a good fighter for lost causes...
Comment to Dr Any Ellul.
I admit that I have an allergy to hypocricy and fakes, of which we seem to have many in Malta. You suggested that I vote for another candidate. But you must not have read my posting. I don't have a vote, and don't intend to claim it either, although I am perfectly entitled to do so. That way I am not faced with a Hobson's choice of having to vote for at best a mediocre set of individuals, or at worst a bunch of ambitious self-seeking arrivistes. As I don't have a vote, I have no candiate to support. That would logically- and literally- make me a disinterested commentator. I have always believed in offering a job/position to a man/woman who doesn't want it. The greater the ambition/desire, the greater my suspicion.
interest in Sharon Ellul Bonici's official campaign launch. If there is
someone who should apologize to the Maltese people is not Sharon, who
pre-accession advocated that Malta was not ready for membership, but those
who promised that membership would solve all our problems. Five years
after membership Malta is, in many aspects, lagging behind most (if not
all) of the other European Member State. Those who were concerned about
their children's future in 2003 because of Sharon's 'critical' campaign,
and still are because of her candidature with the PL for the upcoming EP
elections, should vote for David Casa. This should solve all their lurking
problems. On the other hand, those who want critical MEP's as their
representatives in the EU Parliament, which is composed of 780 MEP's, can
opt to vote for Sharon. For more information regarding Sharon's critical
views, we invite you to visit www.sharon4malta.com. We firmly believe that
there is nothing wrong in being critical in a democratic society. On the
contrary, at this day and age the art of criticism is a sine qua non
requisite for a successful politician.
She is one of the most valid candidates for the EP.
You don't want lackeys in the eu to fight for your rights.
You need FIGHTERS like her.
Therefore I will take your advise in this regard and next June will vote for Sharon. Why settle for a chihuahua when you can have a rottweiler?
I don’t understand how Sharon is trying to fill a post which would have not existed if the Maltese had listened to her back in 2003. This is a case of money talk.
