Magic Kiosk takes its final bow

The pile of debris that was once the Magic Kiosk, in Sliema, is finally being cleared away once and for all after the courts gave the go-ahead last week for demolition to resume.
The dismantling of the turquoise aluminium kiosk had started on January 9 after the restaurant's 30-year lease expired and the owner ignored a number of eviction notices issued by the government.
After the place began to be pulled down, however, the work was interrupted when a court upheld a request for a warrant of prohibitory injunction filed by owner Joe Pace, who wanted to stop the government from recycling the aluminium taken from the kiosk.
Mr Pace said the aluminium belonged to him and the authorities had no right to dispose of the structure.
On February 6, Mr Justice Goeffrey Valenzia decreed that the works can carry on under the supervision of a court-appointed architect.
In the meantime, the area had become an eyesore with piles of debris littering the square.
Following the court's decision, work started yesterday morning at about 7.30 a.m. and are due to continue over the weekend.
The government's intention is to turn St Anne Square, where the Magic Kiosk once stood so conspicuously, into a space to be enjoyed by the public.

I would like to know, why the owner Joe Pace, do not want the goverment to recycle the aluminium as it cannot be used one more time? If we recylce the aluminium, it would be much better for the enviorment and also for us!

if your gonzipn is such an environmentalist then he wouldnt make us switch from the re-useable glass bottles to plastic non re-useable bottles. if gonzipn is such an environmentalist he wouldnt raise the registration tax on hybrid cars that car dealers such as honda aren't going to bother getting them in malta. i could go on for ages

Who said Mintoff is history? We're still battling his ugly remnants.

@ Victor Vella:
Actually when you rent government premises, any refurbishments or additions done belong to the government. As a matter of fact, if you extend the building, you pay more rent and you get nothing in return except for a reduction in your rent for the premises which you built!!

By all means Jo Pace is right , the aluminum , glass and furniture belong to him and he should get them back, the Government has no right to recycle them,on condition though that Mr Pace pays for the demolition and also releases the workers from his employment.

In addition to what Victor Pace wrote below, at Magic Kiosk many employees were of a certain age, people who usually find it hard to get employed. I used to frequent the place very frequently and the food and the service were excellent when one considered how cheap prices where. I hope that the new square will not become a refuge for junkies like many other gardens and squares in the vicinity.

Finally that ugly aquarium like structure is gone!
I suggest the authorities should never lease public land for more then lets say 10 years, as otherwise after time such tenants think that the public land turned theirs!
Especially never permit such horrible construction.
I believe the authorities will be sending the all included bill for demolition to the ex-tenants of the kiosk as we do not want to pay such from our taxes, when they where the ones who made hefty profits out of it.
Well done to all the workers.

Pjazza Sant'Anna was not so popular as it is being said. It was mostly a waiting area to get to the Majestic Theatre. Hardly any children used to play in that dangerous full of traffic environment. Ghar id-Dud was the natural rendez-vous of children wanting to play. It could only be imagined why Perit Pullicino threw his eyes on the Magic Kiosk.

May this be a signal to all the cowboys that Gonzipn really has the commitment towards our environment.

Good news - a bit more breathing space in Sliema.
Next the pavements should be reclaimed all along the sea front, with all the tables and chairs moved back to give at least 3m of open space to walk from the kerbside inwards - rules will not do it, hefty fines are the only answer.
Also all the unofficial and unregulated sales of 'souveniers' from parked cars should be stopped - this is a real eyesore to all who pass by, again hefty fines are the only answer.
Most of the money from the fines should then go to buy trees and flowers for the area, to turn Sliema into a place where everyone enjoys walking around - and not just a 'get rich quick and to hell with the rest of you' sort of place.

It gives me such pleasure and satisfaction to see yet another dark chapter in Maltese history, where democracy had been taken away from us so violently, closed once and for all.
Say goodbye to your "Magic Kiosk" Joe Pace. This is a fitting ending for a story that started on such a terrible note, especially for the Bonello family and the workers it employed.
