Retrograde rent reform Bill
The PN government is not extending protection in the rent reform to gays and cohabitating couples.
This means that the reform is going to be a retrograde one as, whereas up to now all members living under the same roof were protected and had the right to continue living there, now, after this reform, the landlord could easily throw them out. How Christian and democratic can a government be!
I'm not in favour of gay partnership or cohabitation but today a substantial part of the population lives in cohabitation - many with children. What is going to happen to them? Already many couples like those reported in The Times (January 24) are living a tortured life not knowing what is coming to them.
If my memory serves me right, the PN promised to see to the rights of those who live in cohabitation and especially their children. Now it seems that even these children are to be forgotten.
It was argued that the PN is not a liberal party. It is a Christian democrat party. Well, does not a Christian love and cater for all human beings? Can one be a Christian and leave out the gays and the cohabiters? If cohabitating couples are going to increase to a majority, is the government going to legislate only for the married minority? At least there was one PN MEP candidate who had the guts to express himself and state that he is in favour of "the same civil rights". And that is as it should be. I believe there are other open minded MPs and PN supporters who are in favour of "the same civil rights" for everyone.
And what about the Church? Shouldn't she express herself, as otherwise one might think that she is agreeing with this discriminatory policy?

I am just shocked that these views still exist in a 'modern' European society.

No Mr Sammut, the Govt should not continue to subsidise or give social assistance to whoever does not want any responsibility. People who marry are taking the responsibility on themselves to take care of their family and children, paying for everything themselves, including rent, if need be.
So the people who are doing these sacrifies to raise a family and not be a burden on the tax-payers, are themselves paying for the sometimes 'irresponsible' acts of others and other abuses.
Some people just want to suck on the tax payers.

Theodore Sammut
I agree with the Government.
Doing away with all forms of morality and providing support for gay marriages and co-habiting couples is leading to the destruction of the moral values and of society itself which is based on the family as witnessed in many other countries.
According to your arguments, we should decriminalize theft, murder, drugs and every other evil because the are increasing.
Do you or anyone else in their proper senses want that?

@Theodore Sammut - Why should the government give priority to the minority of self appointed gays when the family should be the corner stone of society? Yes the family is not what you are now preaching. The family is the father, the mother and their children. And not those irresponsible single mothers or single fathers or what other new nomenclatures we are giving them. They are all eating our social security bill fast and this list is fast growing. The proper family should be the priority of all of civil society if we want to remain 'civil' and not beasts. Shame on you for advocating such nonsense as to give the renegades first priority over the priority of the FAMILY. That's the concept which you should be advocating not serving mammon. It seems that you have thrown your good values to the wind at a time when you need them most. Just to lambast the PN Government.
