More Maltese going abroad
A total of 21,121 Maltese travelled in December, an increase of 8.3 percent over the comparative month in 2007, the National Statistics Office said.
It said that 95.3 per cent travelled by air.
The majority of Maltese travellers were in the 25-44 age bracket. 24,061 went to EU destinations, the most popular being the UK and Italy. 3,060 chose destinations outside the EU.
The NSO said that throughout last year, the number of Maltese passengers departing by air and sea amounted to 298,995, an increase of 6.9 percent over the corresponding period in 2007.
85.9 percent travelled to EU destinations; the most visited countries being Italy and the UK.
For the cumulative period, male outbound passengers exceeded female ones, the former accounting for 57.4 percent of the total.
The largest proportion of outbound passengers - 45.9 percent - comprised passengers aged between 25 and 44 years, followed by those in the 45-64 age bracket who accounted for 36.9 percent of total outbound tourists.

@Camilleri/DeMatrtino don't mean to be rude of funny like my Maltese friends, but it amazes me why everytime someone sends a comment about travelling say or the weather or what ever takes their fancy, we always tend to get POLITICS somewhere in between, is there nothing more important on the Maltese islands then boreing politics day in day out ,24 hrs a day ,12 months a year. Surely u guys got other things to talk about then Boreing Labour or Nationalists i think? or the Green party, it sounds like carnival to us foreigners. Why not book a table order a bottle of nice Maltese wine , a good meal and Bobs your uncle , and have a good conversation about say the top 20, football, sex & religion seems to go hand in hand in Malta, anything But Politics, please changethe tune,it tends to give one a pain in the buck . "The most visited being the UK and italy". Obviously thanks to the low-cost airlines recently introduced and lower departure tax. Do you remember when Mintoff had introduced a restriction on travelling?

M.Rogers I think it's a bit rude for a foreigner to expect everyone to speak and comment in his language in our own country and not learn OUR language, whether spoken or written. And why should The Times not allow comments in Maltese when some comments are not easily translated or if translated lose their meaning?

To almost everyone who has commented so far
No where in the article is the mentioning of Maltese people going abroad to find work. These are figures for the actual number of Maltese people who have travelled out of Malta. Thus, including anyone who went aborad for any reason whatsoever. If you want figures for those people who did actually relocate abroad, I suggest you ask the governments all over the world to trace them up.

How can some individuals have so little to do with their day as to waste time and energy getting all worked up over how and why people travel abroad?

Of course we go abroad!!!! In todays Malta it is cheaper to go to London than spend a week in Gozo. How come that you can EAT-AS-MUCH-AS_YOU_LIKE in Max ORIENT in CAMDEN TOWN LONDON for a mere 9.50 sterling (ca 11 euros) and you pay 9 euros for a meager pizza in Sliema?
GReedy maltese businessmen are not only turning away tourist but now the maltese as well.
A double room in kings cross cost us 179 sterling for 5 nights. When we wanted to visit Gozo they asked 31 euros a night per head!!!!

I thought the Times was an English reading news, why are some comments in Maltese.. come on Joe, how can we comment if we can't read and understand what's being said, this is like being a foreigner sitting amongst people of different tongue when one just start starring at the ceiling wondering whether they are talking about me or the weather. Its a bit rude in my books, if it's in Maltese well and good no objections but come on its suppose to be international newspaper or is it a slipof the tongue. Mel. Rogers EU citizen

@Edwin Formosa - hekk tridu lil haddiem Malti biex jaqla l-hobza ta' kuljum ? gol-korpi? Isthji jekk taf? Hekk tridhom lil uliedek ihaffru t-trinek fit-toroq, xemx jew xita? hekk tridhom lil haddiema taghna, tallaba minghand il-politici? Jekk il-poplu Malti hux tallab jew fqir mur ara lil dawk in-nisa tad-dar jigru minn tombla ghal ohra, jew mur sal-restaurants u ara l-coffee mornings tal-partitarji laburisti. u nazzjonalisti. U mhux f'San girgor u tarahom jilghabu l-flus fit-tombli, ecc. Mur nhar ta' sibt u hadd fil-hwienet tal-lokalitajiet turistici u tara Maltin jieklu mal-familja. U ghandek il-wicc tfakkarna fil-korpi tal-pijunieri meta kien hawn qghad u ghaks imgiddem u serq galore? Il veru li l-lupu bidel ismu imma qalbu ghada hadra. U l-Brigata hemm ghada minkejja lli l-gdida qaccata.

@F.Bartolo. wrong. getting a job in Britain now is not what it used to be,there is hardly any work going round for the British much less for people from Malta or any other EU country looking for employment besides the unions are creating an uproar because of foreign workers taken the jobs that should been offered in the first place for British workers, i guess what goes round comes round which brings me to my next question - time share jobs be first and foremost be offered to Maltese citizens and not outsiders. The airport looks diserted! a reduction in plane fare would be a help or an asset then perhaps we'll see even more passengers going abroad. You know it makes snece. What a hotch-potch of comments! The same lamentations by those who do not wish to read positive results. Why don't we say that despite all the world financial troubles, we Maltese manage to overcome such bad conditions. Obviously this will not be reported on One News!

More Maltese going abroad> Why doyou blame them i see most are in the 25-44 age bracket.looking for work no doubt i say good luck to them and i don't blame them one little bit, Malta is only fit for the rich and the old, although i'm not so sure about the pensioners how they can servive on their potsy little pension do you?If the newly school leavers with all their hard work achieving good diplomas they can never use over here as there is no decent jobs or soon will be no work for them i can see a high percentage of young Maltese and Gozitans increasing sharply and who can blame them certainly not me.
