A new judge had a word of advice for young lawyers in a speech he made marking his first sitting.
Mr Justice Joseph Zammit Mckeon advised young lawyers not to bite more than they could chew and to keep a sense of humility because the "sun did not rise when they become lawyers".
He was addressing a packed court room where President Eddie Fenech Adami, Chief Justice Vincent De Gaetano, Justice Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, Deputy Opposition Leader Anġlu Farrugia, sitting and past members of the judiciary, directors of the Courts of Justice and lawyers listened attentively.
He called on senior lawyers to respect each other, to treat young lawyers as equals and to serve as an example to them.
Mr Justice Zammit Mckeon said he decided to accept the nomination after deep reflection together with his family and the help of the Holy Spirit. Using the rule of law as a compass, he said he would look to the future and carry out his work with diligence, dedication and humanely.
The judge thanked his parents for the exemplary upbringing they gave him, his lecturers at the University and his past clients with whom he has been working for 27 years.
