€2.4 million project to upgrade security at Maltese embassies
Security at Maltese embassies is being strengthened through a €2.4 million project that should be completed by the end of the year.
The project, co-financed by the European Union and the government, should see the use of the latest fingerprint technology and increased efficiency. The focus would be on having a user-friendly system for visa applicants, the Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said.
He was speaking at the official inauguration of the Central Visa Unit for Effective Immigration Control in Floriana.
In line with the regulations of the Schengen Treaty, the project should pave the way for the introduction of a centralised European visa system in 2010.
Visas would have to be biometric by 2010, following the introduction of biometric passports in October, Dr Borg said. Three consulates in Turkey, Tel Aviv and Ramallah were being opened and where no diplomatic representation existed, visa issuance was being facilitated through other countries, he added.

What about locally? Is the enquiry into the Mitts scandal still on or been deleted into oblivion?
On the 14 October Dr. Austin Gatt makes a statement in Parliament, admitting that over 20,000 email passwords had been stolen from the government server.
It is in the public interest that we know at what stage is the investigation into the alleged hacking of government e-mail accounts.
As clearly stated by Dr. Alfred Sant way back in October - “ apart from the illegality of it, this would clearly impact on the integrity of my work and functions, past and present. My privacy, my rights, including those of a fundamental nature, and the associated rights and interests of my correspondents are equally on the line.”

I can only see this as a massive waste of money, not being funny, but saying your from Malta in this world raises thoughts amongst people and the first thought is: where is Malta?
The Maltese are a peacful people whom harm no one - what is the point in wasting money on security when Malta posses no threat to any country at all?

Obviously GonziPN still feeds the urge to needlessly throw our money around on wasted projects.

Very valid comment! Why are we opening up diplomatic representations in Tel Aviv and Ramallah and other embassies where we are highly represented in the region. What do these embassies manage to do with one Maltese diplomat or just an Ambassador? The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should take a long, hard look at its resources, plan strategically and implement them efficiently. Example, what exactly is a Maltese embassy going to do in Ramallah & Tel Aviv? Bring peace to the Middle East?? We have very talented diplomats but I doubt that we are going to do much. A embassy in Japan has never been considered because of the expense. Japan being the second largest economy in the world, a country whose people love to travel and have environmental issues similar to ours which they solve brilliantly. That is a country we should seek cooperation with and open an Embassy and consulate to bring that cooperation! Before opening an Embassy the MFA should present the reasons to the Foreign Affairs committee in Parliament, and state what it aims to get from such an embassy and what resources it needs to achieve those aims.

I cannot understand the apparent need of a consulate in Ramallah when we do not have a single embassy or (real) consulate in the whole of Latin America or sub-Saharan Africa.
