What if... Chiara wins

Elegant and effortlessly in control, Chiara had the crowds in a frenzy before she even started singing her song What If We, which emerged as the winner of the Malta Eurosong festival.
This is the third time that Chiara, Malta's queen of ballads, has clinched the title. And last night it was clear from the start that she was favourite - being the only one to receive a standing ovation from the crowd that packed the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre in Ta' Qali.
What If We, composed by Marc Paelinck with lyrics by Gregory Bilsen, earned 12,249 votes, while Eleonor placed second with the song Some Day (Paul Giordimaina and Fleur Balzan), which earned 9, 735 votes.
The jury was the first to choose and it shortlisted the 20 entries to the top three super finalists - Chiara; Q, with Before You Walk Away (also by Paul Giordimaina and Fleur Balzan); and Eleonor.
Malta has long been pining for Chiara's return and once she was among the jury's top three, there was no way that the televoting public was going to miss the chance to send her to Russia to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest.
"I felt I had to return to the stage. Too many people have been pushing me to come back and I felt the time was right," she said.
She returns with a new maturity and outlook on life, after giving birth to her 15-month-old daughter Ebony: "My life has changed completely. If before I used to say I'm busy, I didn't know what I was saying. She's taken over my life... and it's better with her in it."
Many felt the song What If We was not as powerful as her previous winners The One That I love (1998) and Angel (2005). What did she think?
"I feel every song is different. This one portrays the new me. I've matured and I've been through so much since 2005. I love this song," she enthused, dedicating the track to her father who passed away last year.
Dressed in a floor-length black dress, designed by Charles and Ron, Chiara did not miss a beat, giving a smooth rendition that oozed confidence.
The evening kicked off with a colourful performance by the Yada Dance Company, followed by the 20 entries. Valerie Vella and Pablo Micallef presented the show, which was organised for the first time by PBS.
The Eurosong, in the hands of executive producer Rueben Zammit, ran smoothly though it was tediously long at four-and-a-half hours.
Chiara will have another hurdle to surmount when she competes in the first Eurovision semi-final on May 12, before reaching the final. Having placed third and second, she's hoping for a homerun this time.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is seeking to abolish the current system of 100 per cent televoting for the final night on May 16.
In all probability, during the heads of delegation meeting in March, the EBU will choose to have a system where on the final night the winning Eurovision song will be chosen through 50 per cent televoting and 50 per cent jury. Full televoting will be retained for the two semi-finals.
This is intended to minimise the neighbourly bloc voting, which has become a bone of contention in recent years and split the festival into East and West.

Chiara's song was the best there was in this festival. Having said so I do not believe the song has the potential of making it through to the finals, even though I admire the smoothness and beauty of the singer's voice.
Malta's frenzy to do well in the festival is penalizing emerging talents especially those who are most likely to experiment with new sorts of music. The festival has become a boring list of tuned shows.
I disagree strongly with the interference of the foreign judges. The same old argument holds.. the spectators are the people, they are the ones who buy the Cds and determine the music charts, so power to the people.

All my Scottish friends went in a frenzy when Chiara won! They absolutely adore her and they love her song - they remember her very well from her "Angel" performance, and look forward to seeing her live in Moscow.
Well done Chiara!

Practically I love hearing all kind of music and by now I can clearly identify a good vocal voice. Chiara's voice is just strong and natural and nobody can deny this. She just surpasses the sound db, with clear and extremely strong voice. So to be fair, she was the best and deserved to win. Funny enough later that evening I met by coincidence one of the foreign jury (at a restaurant) and even him said that the Maltese people have chosen the right winning song. By the way well done to the other Maltese singers as well. Some of them really have got a talent, but on that night it was Chiara who outstanded. WELL DONE

I also see it like Mr.Mizzi when saying that other countries will think we have no talent, but on the other hand I see a very determined Chiara to win.Everyone should have her same attitude on not giving up,it keeps you so very alive. Although with Eurovision you never know cause last year we also had a very determined and confident Morena which unfortunately still did'nt make it to the finals so we just have to wait and see what the outcome will be.I wish Chiara well and the very best.

I have to say I'm really disappointed that Chiara won...the other countries now will think that Malta has a lack of talent..and that's not true..but singers like chiara should give A chance to young talents.....I think it will be another year another failure...sry I'm just not a fan of Chiara's and for the first time I will not watch the eurovision this year...

I believe that Chiara's song is not as strong as the past two songs. I wish her all the best although she was not my favourite this time round. As long as the final vote is entrusted to us viewers, she will always win. people tend to like her and not so much about the song. But one thing is for sure. Most of us who vote, don't know the difference between an Adagio or an Allegro..... so there you have it

Im being constructive as to my honest opinion - for those who can take it. I have mentioned before that both Chiaras entries are in my favorite pop collection of all time because they are just brilliant. This is simply NOT the same. Just by saying we get goose pimples and go all out in blind adoration is not going to help. Malta has been time and time again producing good sounding songs on CD’s but very bad in a live performance…...which after all its what people vote for in the big night. Chiara was the best live performer at par with Ira and Mary. IM SORRY not this time round. Her voice is not fitting to the song, I hope she will have time for adjustments. – and of course all the luck to Chiara who already make Malta proud no matter the result.

Yes , a home run, aptly put. Such a boring song, just turn on a synth and give it a 4/4 beats...and there you have it.
I actually thought that the best song in a tediously long program was the one sung by guests 'Airport Impressions.' As a serious music lover, I can honestly say that only a couple took my fancy.....
plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose .... or rather in English...THE MORE THAT THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME!

Chiara is a good singer and she has talent. Eurovision winners tend to be female, young. Or Groups. At 33, Chiara is not getting any younger. If she wants the accolade of winning, she has to go for it. Risky? Yes and no. If she wins, it will enhance her career even further no doubt. If she does not win, or does not do particularly well, her undoubted artistry will always carry the day. One thing to remember is that an unknown winner has no guarantee of subsequent succes if they win the title. An unknown with average talent who does not do very well will disappear. Chiara has a voice, she has talent that will get better and better and whether she does well or not, her standing is guaranteed. One thing is for sure. One cannot
rubbish a proven talent just because s/he did not bring home the trophy. It is as simple as that and Chiara needs to understand this. That is the worst thing that can happen. That she fails to bring home the trophy. It is only a song festival. Good luck Chiara.

First of all congratulations to Chiara and to all the contestants who took part in this year's selection.
I hope that we stop this nonsense and that for once we unite as a nation and rally behind Chiara. She has a fabulous voice and deserves our support!
I really would have loved to watch the final, but since I work abroad I have to rely on the webcast. The webcast was a disgrace! Most of the time we were only getting still images. Even the radio webcast wasn't working for long periods and it is not a matter of internet connection on my part (I have a 30MB connection which works fine). This same problem was faced by all Maltese living abroad and the many foreigners who follow the festival.
TVM should take things in its hands and demand that at least for these special events, followed by so many people, a decent webcast be uploaded.
I follow most national finals and believe me as a country we (MALTA) are the ones with the most unreliable webcast.

A song composed and written by foreigners is what we deserve for the eurotrash festival. Described in advertising as the best music event in malta (oh come on!) the festival yesterday was a great time for a good laugh - once again!

Every Maltese is entitled to his or her opinion when it concerns their money being spent for the eurovison no one is dictating to whether they should vote for other contestants who i must say were much better then the winner and kept the audience listening instead of yawning, although i think that this time round Chiara was not projecting the livilness of the song and found it dead & rather boreing, its not a winner and will be lucky to make even the entry finals..Lets face it without any disrepect to the contestants its not up to the standard of say Abba! or even the Irish winner some time back. Just my honest opinion, hope i'm proven rong. DJ Joe Martin(UK)

AND WE'RE OFF...
A mere 24 hours after a troupe of foreign judges and the Maltese public overwhelmingly voted for Chiara to represent us at Eurovision, the armchair critics come out bitching and spitting about who should who should have and who shouldn't have won last night! Of course the competition was tough... of course the other singers could sing....they were FINALISTS.
Yes, Raquela has a beautiful voice (can't wait to see more of her) - so does Wayne - and all the others. Its to be expected if you've made it to the finals. But Chiara had that little something extra that goes beyond a voice - she gives me gooseflesh whenever she sings.
Incidentally, A Attard - there WAS a frenzy last night. I know cause I was there.
I have no way of knowing whether Chiara even reads this, but instead of making her doubt her success, i really think we should be supporting her in EVERY way

I knew my theory was right! And the people have spoken! Let's keep sending Chiara to Eurovision year after year forever!!! Its more practical cause she's a wonderful singer & it would surely save us money!! Apart from the benefit that she would become the best known face in Eurovision! Nothing beats the obvious! :)

I was a bit surprised to see Chiara even in the first super three. There was many better singers and better songs. I believe we again made another mistake. She is a very good singer but the song was not realy adopted to be sunged by her. Sorry to say this I wish her the very best but if she would not make it for the final she will have her reputation very badly hurt

ONLY THOSE WHO DARE WIN! ... Chiara has it all ... She is modest, but yet filled with self-confidence and thirst for victory. If only much more Maltese had this winning attitude!!!! .... if only ...

Chiara did not sing as her usual self! what is all the fuss about.... Chiara did much better with the past songs lets be realistic and a number of songs had an impeccable interpretation on the night. She does not seem half as comfortable singing this song than the ones she represented Malta with previously....I can't understand the Frenzy mentioned......maybe its on her past record (which I commend and admire) but not on this new product! .... maybe one should concentrate on improvement for the big day and not blind praise to mask to shortcomings. Chiara CAN DO BETTER!

Chiara is a fantastic singer - I agree. Chiara has a particularly original and beautiful voice - I agree. Chiara's song deserved to win - I beg to difffer...I definitely don't agree! With all honesty I do believe that Raquela's song was so much better and she even outshown Chiara with her voice and fatastic talent. I believe that Chiara commited a very bad career move - I mean till now she was a hero for us and we knew her as the one who came third and second at the Eurovision. What will happen if - as i predict - she does not even pass through the semi finals?!! Won't that hurt her reputation?
