From studies made over a period of 10 years it was estimated that the amount of rainwater percolating into the aquifers was about 23 million cubic metres every year.

Answering a parliamentary question by Noel Farrugia (PL), Resources Minister George Pullicino said that the amount of water pumped up from the aquifers between 2003 and 2007 had amounted to between 13.1 million cubic metres in 2006 and 15.2 million cubic metres in 2003. The Water Services Corporation had not yet published its figures for 2008.

Non-metered private pumping was estimated at around 19.5 million cubic metres a year, making a total of between 33 and 35 million cubic metres of pumped rainwater every year.
