Drop in MIA passenger movements
Passenger movements at Malta International Airport in January decreased by 11.8 percent when compared to the same month last year.
MIA said that it handed 138,010 movements, a shortfall of 18,430 passenger movements on the scheduled and non-scheduled flights.
Aircraft movements also dropped by 10.4 percent to a total of 1,694. The seat capacity in January showed a drop of 9.5 percent whilst the seat load factor also decreased by 1.5 percent.
Cargo and mail handled at MIA during last month was 1,313 tonnes - a drop of 14.6 percent over the same month last year.
MIA said that the loss in passengers from the UK market was again being felt with a drop of 13.4 per cent in passenger movements last months.
MIA again experienced a downturn of the Italian and French markets, (-11.5 percent) and (-4.5 percent), respectively, likewise the German market decreased by 9.5 percent.
However Frankfurt and Rome Fiumicino airports registered an increase of 13.2 percent and 18.4 percent in passenger movements to MIA when compared while Libyan Arab traffic increased by 17.2 percent.

Pressure should be mounted on MIA to reduce its fees in line with airports of the same size and new LCC routes from Germany, France and Switzerland opened as we are just losing out on these markets to make good for long hours of empty aprons and gates at MIA. Subsidies are not the solution since there is a limit to how much subsidies can be given.
Airmalta and other legacy carriers will also benefit from a reduction in MIA fees, they could also lower their fares to Malta.

Airlines use the airport.The airport charges taxes.Landing fees and airport taxes are part of the package you pay when you fly to a destination.
Now our airport has one of the highest taxes and this was also stated by the Ryanair Brian Crawley not by me only.What do you prefare to lower the taxes and have more airliners/passengers using/operating to the airport or you keep the fares high possible and good luck ??
I said that in this crucial period where the world economy is not so good, should keep or lower these expenses which might hinder low cost to start or continue operating to Malta.
Earlier on Norwegian Air shuttle, German Wings and Volare Web reported that Malta route will not be operated!!Mr.Bartolo even the aviation fuel is much higher compared with other countries and I know what I'm saying .This will all result in a drop because other airlines will choose Spain , Greece and Cyprus instead of Malta!!

MIA should lower fees and taxes.
Airmalta should lower fees and fuel surcharge.
Airmalta should operate to routes and market more into new markets which can be beneficial like the Scandinavian market, Asian markets, etc. Diversification from the usual destinations is important, especially hen these countries are crushed by the recession.

The only solution is to DECREASE the fees now. MIA is keeping tourism outside Malta because of its excessive costs. Because of their ridiculous fees, companies like Ryanair and easyJet, which bring in big numbers, are being put off.
Low cost airlines may not be the best airlines in the world, but they are able to bring in the numbers and thats what counts.
We are living in prehistoric times by leaving such low-cost airlines at bay.

Regrettably ,this is only the tip of the iceberg before the onset of the true tourist season and it makes a mockery of the highly optimistic forecast predictions for passenger movements for 2009.(2.9 million coincidentally)However,more recognition of the negative impact on the cargo section should be noted as the dramatic decline in this vital generation of revenue will indoubtedly severely impact on balance of trade figures,MIA ,more like MAMA-MIA unfortunately!

Will there ever come a day when you will get over your obsession with the landing charges??
Airlines' decision on whether or not to operate to a particular airport does not depend solely on landing charges! Actually airport charges amount to a very small share of their total cost, so you can stop making yourself belief that that ALONE will improve the situation...

The economic crunch has been taking its toll on airlines since mid 2008....which has led more than a few airlines to ground aircraft and/or drop the so called leisure destinations for other routes (business destinations) ie those routes that are less vulnerable to the economic crunch. Hence, a reduction in seat capacity for Malta :(

simply lower rates and market some new routes and the numbers will go up.
low cost airline wants to base planes here...if this happens hotels will be happy, workers in tourism will be happy and so will MIA
