Ta' Xbiex-based Shireburn Software has won IBM's Lotus Chief Technology Officer Innovation award for their Integra for Notes product. This prestigious award recognises visionary IBM business partners who are leading the technology charge by exploiting IBM Lotus Software's latest capabilities in innovative and leading-edge ways. The award recognises those companies fostering innovation at an ingenuity level that stands out above their peers.

Integra for Notes is a solution platform invented by Shireburn that enables the integration of Microsoft Excel and Word with Lotus Notes data. It is used by some of the best known companies globally such as HSBC, Henkel, USAF, Reuters, Volvo, JCB, Hertz, BP and Deutsche Bank.

"It gives a great sense of satisfaction for the recognition of a lot of hard work that has gone into the Integra product family over a number of years but also of the cutting-edge innovation that we have undertaken in the last year," a jubilant John de Giorgio, managing director at Shireburn, told i-Tech on his return from the United States. "Malta is considered weak in R&D (research and development) and innovation and here is a Maltese company being recognised by IBM from among its tens of thousands of business partners specifically for its innovation."

The announcement was made at Lotusphere, IBM's annual conference dedicated to help organisations of all sizes capitalise on ground-breaking technology and business concepts.

"This particular award is for innovation and therefore you need to demonstrate the innovative approach or technology that has been utilised in the development of a specific product or service. You need to show innovation but also quality and success. Innovation for the sake of it does not necessarily lead to success in the market."

"One year ago at Lotusphere we met with senior IBM management to discuss how our Integra products could be enhanced to integrate with IBM's Lotus Symphony in addition to the support we already provided for Microsoft Office, and we identified the need for an API in Symphony which needed to provide us with specific functionality to enable this integration. We worked very closely with IBM's development lab in China, responsible for Symphony, in the definition of the required functionality and its testing. This API was launched on the eve of Lotusphere." Integra for Notes has collected a number of awards since its initiation including the Lotus Advisor Award in three successive years, the e-Pro Magazine Award, and the Computer Society of Malta's IT Product of the Year in 2007.
