How many tenants have expressed an interest in taking up SmartCity Malta office space so far?

There is a healthy interest by a significant number of knowledge-based companies to set up their operations in SmartCity Malta. This interest has accelerated as soon as we published the details of the space we shall be providing in SCM01, which will be the first of its type in Malta and one of the most advanced in the region.

How many tenants have actually signed a lease agreement to take up such office space? How many of these represent local and foreign companies?

We shall make announcements at the appropriate time. In the meantime, SmartCity Malta is endeavouring to ensure the success of our business partners through our committed vision to develop a unique destination for all businesses, whether they are international, regional or local.

When are the first tenants expected to move in?

In 2010, SmartCity Malta will release its first ready-to-operate, state-of-the-art office space building - SCM01 - providing 12,000 square metres of office space with intelligent infrastructure serving as the first milestone for the creation of the vibrant ICT and media hub in which Ricasoli will be transformed.

This will be followed by the supporting release of further office buildings and the other ancillary components.

The prominent emphasis of balance between work and life will be evidently notable in view of the wide-ranging value added services and amenities that SmartCity Malta will be offering. From its unique views to its outstanding open spaces, lagoon and amphitheatre, SmartCity Malta will be a unique business destination in the Mediterranean.

At what stage has the project arrived at?

To date, SmartCity Malta has demolished all the factories in the previous industrial estate, cleaned the site, constructed an administrative block for its operations, and in November commenced the construction of SCM 01 which is expected to be handed over to the first business partners in SmartCity Malta in 2010.

How many construction companies are involved in the project so far and how many employees are directly involved in the project at this stage?

SmartCity Malta has appointed BV Joint Venture, an affiliation between Bonnici Brothers Ltd and Ballut Blocks Ltd, as the general contractor for SCM01 which is the first office building that will form part of the township.

In the construction of SCM01, BV Joint Venture, and all its sub-contractors and suppliers will be adhering to the guidelines of SmartCity's LEED(R) - the world's premier certification programme for sustainable buildings.

SmartCity Malta's facilities will be the first office buildings in Malta to have a low environmental footprint rating, hence establishing a model to be emulated by other developments in Malta.

The number of employees on site varies according to the works which are underway.

Is the completion of the project still on target?

Yes. After reviewing the operations of the company during the last quarter of 2008, the board of directors noted with satisfaction the results achieved to date. This satisfaction was reflected also in the fact that the shareholders raised their equity in the project, hence creating an even stronger company.

Are you still confident that the project will generate 5,600 jobs?

Yes. SmartCity Malta will fully honour its commitment with the government.

Can you outline your company's international marketing efforts aimed at promoting SmartCity Malta?

While 2008 was a year where most of the ground work was being prepared, in 2009 SmartCity Malta is now engaging on an aggressive direct international marketing plan which was approved by the board in January, in which we shall be targeting niche sectors in the ICT and media fields to attract them to consider Malta as their preferred investment and operational destination.

Among others, SmartCity Malta is targeting ICT and media operators including some innovative niche areas such as ICT education, knowledge process outsourcing, maritime ICT, computer gaming and IP broadcasting.

SmartCity Malta's team, in collaboration with SmartCity's headquarters' team based in Dubai, are engaged with leading IT and media firms who are interested in relocating their operations to SmartCity Malta.

The combined group support of SmartCity Malta and SmartCity's headquarters - who have a proven track record with the success of attracting international companies to the thriving business parks models - is a key ingredient for the complete success of SmartCity Malta.
