Heavy snow in the UK yesterday disrupted Air Malta's operations to London Heathrow Airport, which had to cancel or delay flights throughout the day.

An Air Malta flight that was due to leave for Heathrow at around 8 a.m. departed five hours late. Meanwhile, the flight scheduled to leave Malta for Heathrow at 4.50 p.m. was cancelled.

An Air Malta spokesman said the cancellation was due to heavy congestion at the airport and consequently no slot was available for the aircraft to land.

The spokesman said the late aircraft was kept at Heathrow until late yesterday in the hope it would be able to operate and bring back passengers who were stranded in London.

Airports are expected to face more disruption from the snow, which is said to be the heaviest in 20 years.
