Mattresses set on fire in migrants' disturbance
A number of mattresses were set on fire during a noisy disturbance by migrants at Safi detention camp this evening.
Informed sources said the migrants appeared to be protesting over forthcoming deportations. They also threw stones and hot water as the guards.
Police reinforcements were called to the scene and the situation was contained.
Migrants also caused a disturbance last week, during which a guard was slightly injured when he was hit by a can of shaving cream.

If the Italian gov. declared a state of emergency about illegal immigration; what should WE declare then? If even pensions are hardly sustainable even now, for how long can we (ill) afford to maintain illegal immigrants? (and how many more?)
I am shocked to see toddlers and pregnant women also crammed among them defying all sorts of weather. (not all of them are refugees) If they care so little for their own and their families' safety; how much would they care about our families, our culture, our beliefs, and our fragile economy?
They should have burnt their boats before they came over.

There goes more of the tax payers money replacing mattresses, which we pay for they burn and the human rights people tell us to treat them better, please, I was under the impression that these poor people had nothing in there own countries, so surely anything they have here is a bonus, and yet they still complain. Isn't it time to say enough is enough.

Are we going to give them new ones, NO, its time for our authorities to show thier teeth, leave them to sleep on the floor , so they will learn, if they learn. because here we are not in the jungle. tell them to make these acts in there countries? they are having such things for free from our taxes that all we pay and in return the thank you is DISTURBANCE, i would like to know how we will cope as a country if a big influx will come in summer because already they are coming in big numbers in winter so whats will happen in summer? how the country will cope? to solve the problem make a law in our constitution that we did not accept illigal immigrants any more because we have too much now, we are trying to change the constitution for abortion so why not change it once and with one stone hit 2 birds.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I will reiterate that what is needed is an EU initative on behalf of the mediterranean countries which are bearing the brunt of illegal migration coming over from Libyan shores. The Libyans must be aggressively (diplomatically speaking) engaged on their turning a blind eye on this phenomenon in which, ultimately, they must be held responsible. It should be made clear to them that a normal relationship with EU member states can only occur once their shoreline is closed off for such illegal activities. Ultimately, if they persist, the possibility of imposing sanctions should be brought up.

It is very easy, as easy as ABC. Dear comrades leave them to sleep on the floor. Those mattresses were bought from our taxes. Any UN official for comment, please? **** Mr. Herbert Guillaumier you are perfectly right. The only thing I want to add is and I ask -- what will happen if any soldiers or police officers will suffer any injuries or deaths? This will pass like a breeze in summer? Where are those big mouths of the UN and their local friends. ANY ANSWER FROM THEM?

Enough is enough !!! I really wish that the competent authorities who are in charge of these detention centres just DO NOT replace the burnt mattresses and leave these ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS sleeping on the cold floors once they personally burnt them. Why should my tax money go to buy them a new mattress instead of repairing the roads, schools and historical buildings, or for a better medical service? WHY?????

Those that burned there mattresses should be left without them we should we tax payers keep forking out money to keep these uninvited guests on our shores. Maybe the delegation that passed so many negative remarks about Malta and they way we keep these emigrants they should take them home with them. I ask this of them will they open there door to an unknown and univited person at there home? will they open there home and hug them in a warm welcome when you don't know if the person is a wanted child molesterm, murderer, thief or what ever he maybe. These are people that just claim they need politacal refuge but we don't know nothing about them. The goverment should send them back right away from there original departure to our Islands and let the Goverment of that country deal with them.

We are sick and tired of these people. They come here uninvited and unwanted. They demand rights which most of them don't have. They disrespect our soldiers and staff. They cause riots and damage property. Those who burnt the mattresses should be made to sleep on the floor so they learn a lesson. This has become a very serious situation and the govt. should repatriate all the immigrants before the Maltese lose their patience.

The mattresses weren't of their satisfaction? Perhaps they would like a king size each like they had in their country? Deport them NOW, they are showing NO respect for maltese citizens and are testing our patience, which have their limits! DEPORT THEM !!!

At first I used to feel sorry for them but unfortunately I have to say that can't wait for the authorities to send them back home as with their attitude they're making our country into a racist one.

In my opinion they should not be given new ones. They should learn a lesson that what they ruin they don't get back. After all when each one of us breaks something at home he/she has to fork the money to buy a new one!

They should not be given any more mattresses. These are paid from our taxes. If they are going to stay here for the time being they should obey and respect our laws if they want to be treated as human beings.

The bomb is icking and will explode soon. I hope that what they burn and damage will not be replaced. The only solution is to send them back and better not let them come in.

With all due respect to these immigrants, they should be more careful of what they're doing. These people are not wanted and I am not being a racisit here. Malta has enough problems at the moment coping with all the problems from the closing down of factories and the 4-day weeks and this is just the cherry on top of the cake. These immigrants have everything for free for what its worth - accomodation, food, clothes, water and electricity, support and advice. If the people who caused the disturbances are not happy here, then they should be deported back to their countries with the other deportees - whether or not they have refugee status!

Do we give them new ones?So shouldnt trouble meakers be deported as well no matter where they come from? That at least would show others that in Malta we do not accept beggars to be choosers.

Well, I truly hope that the masterminds of this disturbance and the immigrant arsonists will be prosecuted.
Unfortunately, as far as i know, none of the immigrants were brought before the courts accused of injuring men in uniform or of causing damage to property of the Maltese Government.
By doing nothing with the excuse of not stirring up other riots we are giving the wrong message. A very wrong message. We must understand the anthropological background of these immigrants. For them being lenient is not a blessing and an act of Christian brotherhood but a sign of weakness if not opportunity to strike a major riot that might cause serious injures in the future.
Our police and soldiers deserve respect . Anyone targeting them directly or any person trying to intentionally threaten the well being of our servicemen should be brought to justice for the sake of equality. If a Maltese person litters in the streets , he is fined and rightly so. But what happens when an immigrant throws a can at a solider or sets a mattress on fire? Lets not be racist and be equal for once.
