Liquigas takes over gas distribution
Liquigas Ltd has taken over responsibility for the sales and distribution of gas in the Maltese islands, in collaboration with distributors who privately own gas distribution trucks and are licensed to distribute gas in Malta and Gozo.
Enemalta is still responsible for the running of the Gas Division Plant in Qajjenza, including the filling and processing of gas.
The telephone number for sales, distribution and any emergency, as from today is 21651661-5.

@ G Mangion
I think if anyone can talk of inventing prices at this point in time, it's the government and it's authorities!!! Three different versions of statistics, dates and facts from Austin Gatt, Enemalta and Price regulator!!
Go on with your bias mr Mangion.

Thank you for summarizing, Mr. Fenech. Based on your survey, our costs are at the high end, or slightly more than other countries in the EU. No surprises there. Assuming that LPG will fall in line (and given that the current operator has an absolute monopoly, that's a fair assumption) we will now be paying at the high end of the EU scale for LPG as well. In other words, we should expect the cost of gas to double, at least. Sushi or steak tartare, anyone?

Cost of varies fuels effective: FEB. 2, 2009: 1. The cost per Litre of Petrol Euro- super 95 in 18 EU countries varies from 0.7 to 1.00 €. Compared to Malta 1.06 € per litre, of which 0.57 are tax; duty. 2. The cost of Diesel per Litre in 18 EU countries varies from 0.77 to 0.98 €. Compared to Malta 0.98 € per litre, of which 0.48 are tax; duty. 3. The cost of heating fuel per Litre in 18 EU countries varies from 0.4 to 0.73 €. Compared to Malta 0.77 € per litre, of which 0.22 are tax; duty. 4. The cost of LPG per Litre in 18 EU countries varies from 0.42 to 0.59 €. Present cost in Malta 0.27 € per litre. Reference: 1 Litre of LPG is approximate to 0.56 Kgs. Since the LPG will no longer be subsidised its cost is almost certain to increase. The increase is in part dependant on the amount of tax; duty imposed by the authorities! Therefore the regulator has to intervene to keep the price as low as possible!! The above cost include tax; duty for more information check http://www.energy.eu/#prices

I think that I will have to change my gas cooker for a wooden one if the prices are going to be as dear as they are saying that they going to be.

@ MuscatPat
A monopolistic system is one which licences one particular business to the exclusion of others.
Freeing the market of monopoly, means that any competent company will be allowed to compete in the market. Therefore it is up to other companies to participate.
In the absence of competitors to the new company, you are absolutely right, it becomes another monopoly which the government cannot change.

So what do Liquigas actually do? If the Qajjenza plant is still processing and filling, and the truck owners are distributing, what exactly is left for them to do? Sorry, might be just business ignorance on my part....

Privatizzazzjoni bla kompetizzjoni hi biss mod biex taghmel individwu sinjur u tghakkes lill-konsumatur, iktar u iktar fejn ir-regolaturi, l-ghassiesa, li ghandna Malta naqa.....

I wish the new venture a lot of success. However, I think there can be no other way except success, giving that this new private business venture enjoys a monopoly. We critcise Government monopolies day in day out, and really they dump their inefficiencies on us. But, having a private monopoly is just as bad. A monopoly is always a monopoly and always one sided and wrong. Unless one has the monopoly of soul saving, in which case, it will be an exception, monopoly is always wrong and does not make business or social sense in todays democracy.
