President Emeritus Guido de Marco yesterday delivered the first lecture at the Fortunato Mizzi political school in Gozo.

Prof. de Marco outlined the history of the Nationalist Party, focusing on Nerik Mizzi who dedicated his whole life to politics. He also said the political "mission" cannot guarantee its own future without the committed involvement of young people who work for the good of their country.

He spoke about the Nationalist identity, saying it entails affiliation with a party that represents Malta's contemporary history and which has always made the right choices.

Tomorrow's politics should not fight yesterday's battles, he continued, bringing up the example of former Prime Minister Ġorġ Borg Olivier, whose keen sense of diplomacy and his selfless dream of independence guided him how to proceed with his own battle, which guaranteed freedom for generations.

Prof. de Marco referred to the 1980s' strife for freedom and the then Nationalist leaders' sense of duty. He noted that since 1987, the Nationalist government has worked hard to strengthen democracy and to see Malta join the EU and, more recently, to ensure the country's membership in the euro and Schengen zones.

Prof. de Marco ended his speech by encouraging students to believe in the Nationalist Party, and to maintain close relationships with the Maltese people so that they can voice their social concerns.
